The Experience
Caroline and Patrick welcome you to their little corner of the German-French border with convivial breakfasts around the family table and evening meals at the weekends: local meat, veg and goat’s cheese from a nearby farm. The surrounding villages and valleys are dotted with good Alsatian restaurants.
Fabulously wild walks up and down the forested slopes of the Vosges Mountains are just a short drive away, as is charming Strasbourg. Borrow bikes and plan a circuitous route to finish at the goat’s farm for Sunday lunch and a cheese tasting, or visit one of the village vineyards to sample aromatic Alsace wines.
Winter visitors can drop in on the Christmas markets along the Route des Vins; in summer there are picnic spots in the lovely sloping gardens here.

This was our 1st post-pandemic trip and we had the pleasure of staying with Patrick and Caroline for the 2nd time. Patrick and Caroline are warm, welcoming hosts who make you feel at home with their attention to detail and the delicious ,caringly prepared breakfasts featuring local foods. Caroline helped us with our itinerary planning and made thoughtful suggestions for places to eat. The rooms are very comfortable and tastefully decorated. We look forward to visiting again.

A warm welcome, very comfortable beds and cosy little cottage, plus the most delicious breakfast. Patrick and Caroline are such charming hosts, they even booked and recommended great restaurants for both our stopovers. We had a wonderful stay on our way to and from Austria. Highly recommend a visit.

Every attention to every detail is covered. Both Caroline and Patrick are extremely knowledgeable/helpful with local advise and most generous with their time. The rooms/apartments have everything one might need, including a sewing kit and cotton buds. We have been to many places from Sawday in France BUT no question, La Vallée breakfast outside was absolutely the BEST ever.

We had an amazing time at Caroline and Patrick's B and B. They both really made us feel at home. They were charming and very knowledgeable about the Alsace region. They helped us plan our itinerary each day and had great suggestions for locations that we otherwise wouldn't have found which helped make made our trip memorable. We looked forward each morning to our breakfasts which featured a variety of local Alsatian foods and were prepared with great care. We really loved staying with them and we were sad to leave. We do really look forward to visiting again.

After twenty minutes by car from Strasbourg you reach this little Bijou. Our two-storey cottage "LUNE" is suitable for 2 people and has everything that makes it cozy and comfortable. The extremely nice owners of this Maison d'hôtes personally take care of the needs of the guests. The very rich breakfast, fridge and kettle in the room, gave us a good basis for the daily diverse activities of the region: hiking, museums, botanical tours, many ways to enjoy the Alsatian cuisine. The hosts Caroline and Patrick have prepared a detailed dossier and are ready to help and advise at any time.

This was the perfect place for a short trip. I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the gardens, and the comfortable bed. The breakfast was delicious and the hosts are extremely helpful and gracious. It is close to Strasbourg, and yet completely rural.

Location
The neighbourhood
The cottages are burrowed down a quiet lane of timber-framed houses on the outskirts of the village. Kuttolsheim has wine shops, a bakery and takeaway pizzas, and there are excellent Alsace restaurants and local weekly markets in almost all of the neighbouring villages. Charming, chocolate box Strasbourg is 18 kilometres away – a permanently Christmassy town of fairytale houses and cosy taverns.
Local points of interest from Caroline & Patrick Hürlimann
- The lovely village of Kuttolsheim lies at the outset of the famous Route des Vins which leads through the rolling vineyards and the typical Alsatian villages of the region against a backdrop of the Vosges mountains. There is plenty to do in the area.
- When the magical period of the Christmas markets is over, there is nevertheless a nice range of activities visitors to the region can do in the area in the winter, to suit everyone’s taste. You can go snowshoe walking, skiing in small family resorts etc
- For those who are into culture, there are always concerts, exhibitions and plenty to do in Strasbourg, nearby Baden-Baden and Karlsruhe. You do need a car however, although access to Strasbourg is easy in the weekdays and on Saturdays by local bus 205
- Come to the Alsace in the spring, when asparagus and fresh strawberries are abundant everywhere! It's great for biking and not too taxing although there are some hills that will keep you fit!
- Explore the castles and fortresses on the hills of the Vosges . You will not be disappointed with the hikes we recommend and there are quite a few of them in the area or within a 50 km distance

Introducing
Caroline & Patrick Hürlimann
Caroline and Patrick are keen cooks and enjoy cooking delicious food. Sweet treats and healthy breakfasts are Caroline’s speciality – she’s also a linguist and speaks Arabic and German as well as teaching English. Patrick, a native Alsatian is a keen Kougelhopf baker and can recommend everything local, from walks to wine. The couple have lived over the border in Switzerland for many years but have now come to run their B&B permanently, bringing their two beautiful cats Percy and Chacha with them.
Our stay in ‘Etoile’ was absolutely perfect. The cottage is so comfortable and has everything you would need. Caroline and Patrick make you feel so welcome at La Vallee. We really appreciated their local knowledge and suggestions for activities. Breakfast is a treat, with many Alsatian specialties. A peaceful place to stay, we stayed 3 nights but wished we could stay longer.
