Paris and beyond - dog-friendly city breaks in France
It’s tempting to stick to the countryside when you take your dog on holiday with you, but you shouldn’t rule out an urban adventure. Here are a few of France’s growing number of dog friendly city hotels we’ve discovered.
Hôtel de l’Atelier
While Paris is so easy to reach, keep the dog amused for another couple of hours on the train and you could be strolling the boulevards and bridges of Avignon. This small, family-run hotel is in a quiet, historic suburb and as calm as a country villa. The sun terrace is a gorgeous place to raise a glass to the day and there’s a big blackboard where you can write what you’ve been up to and swap stories with other guests. A short hop on the bus or an energising stroll will take you to the city centre but there’s a park nearby and the scenic riverbanks for morning walks.
Le Relais du Louvre
It’s so easy to nip over and spend a weekend in Paris, especially when you don’t have to arrange dog sitting. Checking into this storied townhouse near the Louvre takes you from King’s Cross straight into the warm golden glow of old Par-ee. Revolutionaries printed newsletters in the cellar and the ground floor café (closed in 1850, so you’re a bit late for coffee) was the inspiration for Café Momus in Puccini’s Bohême. What it lacks in space, it more than makes up for in style, with bright rooms, friendly service and breakfast brought to your door.
Hôtel le Relais Montmartre
Montmartre is a place that lives up to its legend. It might be a little more upmarket than in times gone by, but artists still flock to attic apartments and there’s a timeless feel to wandering the cobbles on a misty, streetlit night. You and the dog can spend pleasant days and hours strolling the cemetery full of famous names, seeing the Moulin Rouge without having to hear Ewan McGregor singing, and watching the artists in the Place Du Terre. What’s more, turning down a sidestreet to the discreet entrance of this charming hotel makes you feel like you’re discovering a little gem, every time.
