The Chequers, Oxfordshire
This gorgeous, high-beamed country pub runs a full menu alongside the Sunday roasts. You can order anything from a superb toastie to chicken paillard, but you’d be mad to pass up the fabulous dry-aged beef or the perfectly cooked local pork with crispy crackling.
Inside, dine in a dramatic, open-plan interior of low beams, stone walls, roaring wood-burner and a dart board put to good use. Soaring blue-green rafters and a vast dresser racked with wine bottles create an impression in the dining extension, where a blackboard up high announces the food.
The White Horse, Lincolnshire
A community plea saved this local and the new team, headed by farmer Mark Richardson, have transformed it into a smart but welcoming inn. Pieces of farm buildings and “horsey tributes” are scattered throughout the décor and the kitchen prides itself on doing great things with a wealth of local produce.
Take advantage of their Sunday Lunch offer, which includes the likes of beef and lamb with all the trimmings. There’s freshly caught salmon too, and a Mediterranean linguine for vegetarians.
The Barrington Boar, Somerset
Within a few miles of this beautiful old stone pub, a wealth of farmers, foragers, brewers & cheesemongers work their wonders, and the menu features them all. The beers haven’t come much further and they even have a secretive “truffle guy” who sources them the fragrant fungus from the forest floor. It’s all part of chef Alasdair Clifford’s drive to showcase the county’s fabulous produce. He was grown locally too, so he knows what he’s talking about.
The rooms, a few metres from the main building, overlook the garden, making for a great night’s sleep that’ll set you up for a fine West Country breakfast.
The Inn at Loch Tummel, Perth & Kinross
This lovingly restored pub sprinkles some local flavour among the classics, with haggis Scotch eggs and mussels as well as traditional roasts. Everything is impeccably sourced, with herbs and fruit from the garden, and all vegetarian options are also vegan, so everyone can find something they love.
Come for warm welcomes, roaring fires and stunning countryside walks in the surrounding area. You can bring your four-legged-friend too!
The Star Inn at Sancton, Yorkshire
You’d expect at least one Yorkshire pub to feature in our favourite Sunday lunches and with chef Ben being crowned Yorkshire Pudding Champion two years running, this was an easy choice. The former Saxon coaching inn serves incredible food using produce from their allotment and orchard.
Try Yorkshire pudding with confit oxtail and onion gravy or Anna’s Happy Trotter belly pork, braised kale and bacon with black pudding and Harrogate Blue bonbon and cyder reduction.
The Cornish Arms, Cornwall
A Sunday menu that showcases so much of Cornwall’s local produce you’ll have a hard time choosing. Maple-glazed pork belly, saddleback loin, duck, sirloin and brisket or a host of other dishes, all served with a solid emphasis on “food over fuss”.
Inside is a lively, unpretentious atmosphere. Eat in the gleaming dining room or outdoors in the beer garden when the weather holds.
