The Woodshed, Midlothian
Just ten miles from Edinburgh, it’s a mile-long drive down a bumpy farm track but you’re rewarded by a timber-clad cottage for two that blends beautifully into the landscape around it. French windows fill the room with light, and amazing views stretch out for miles from your private garden. You’re nestled amongst acres of walking trails, and we recommend taking a picnic into the heather-clad hills (owner Jenny leaves you home-baked goodies if you’ve not quite mastered baking your own).
High in the Pentland Hills Regional Park, you’ll feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but Edinburgh is close if you fancy a day trip. Whatever you fill your days with, you’ll be glad to return to your cosy cottage for a soak in the hot tub and a spot of stargazing.
Old-Lands, Monmouthshire
If you’ve ever dreamed of living on a farm, you won’t go wrong with a stay at Old-Lands. Immersed in wildlife and rolling hills, this grand gothic house is home to the Bosanquet family, whose love of sustainable farming is inspiring.
Stay in a cottage in the stables and you can send children off to the Forest School, buy home-grown produce from the honesty shop and have a tour of the estate with owner Sam, a trained ecologist. There’s a big lake, teeming with wildlife, to row on, and plenty of walks nearby. If you feel like venturing out, Raglan Castle is a ten-minute drive, the Forest of Dean half an hour and the Brecons just a little further. The area is a foodie’s heaven – close to amazing gastropubs, restaurants and even a vineyard.
The North Wing at Trevigue, Cornwall
Trevigue has sat in this spot in the cliffs above the North Cornish coast for over 700 years; your hosts, the Crocker family, have lived here and worked the land for over 40.
The tranquillity of staying here can be addictive. You’re right on the Atlantic Highway, so wholesome walks to nearby secret beaches start from your doorstep. Set off through woodlands and wind your way down to Crackington Haven beach, rewarding yourself with a pint from the seaside pub when you get there. Back at the cottage, there’s a bake-off style cooker and a plethora of stuff to cook with for rustling up homemade goodies. In the evening, grab a book from the collection in the sitting room and snuggle up by the wood-burner.
Cherry Tree Farm, Frome
A rural gem in the friendly village of Nunney, with beautiful beamed ceilings and comfortable rooms. Staying here is like visiting your favourite country-dwelling friend; Jayne and Andrew keep you well fed with homemade jams and granola at breakfast, and fresh produce from the vegetable patch. They’re also more than happy to tell you all about the farmhouse’s long history.
There’s an abundance of picturesque walking trails nearby, through fields or along the river. You’re just five minutes from the charming village of Frome, full of independent shops, brilliant restaurants and markets full of artisan goodies. If you’re after a bit of history, head to Nunney Castle and explore the ruins. Return to the cottage for a sundowner with castle views in the pretty country garden.
Mountain Cottage, Gwynedd
This is the type of place where just getting there is part of the adventure, but you’ll be richly rewarded once you do. There are three cottages here: two adjacent to each other forming part of a traditional Welsh Longhouse, near the main road yet peaceful, and the third down a farm track on the edge of the mountain.
This is a house for sitting and dreaming; the views could keep you busy for hours. Irregular stone walls and window shutters add to the charm of this traditional mountain dwelling. You’re on the edge of the Lleyn peninsula for walks along unspoiled coastline, or woodland strolls further inland if you prefer. Embrace the simple lifestyle; there’s a natural swimming pool nearby and a cosy woodburner for warming up.
The Cottage in the Garden, Sussex
You arrive down a wooded lane reputed to be one of the oldest in England, and gates open to the enchanting mansion house and garden with swathes of lawn and frothy flower beds. Your lovely cottage-on-one-floor is perched high beside your own private terrace with views across the Weald to the South Downs. The well-equipped galley kitchen overlooks the organic vegetable patches and the wildflower meadow is perfect for picnics in summer.
Listen to the birdsong, enjoy homemade suppers from owner Jacqueline and spend your days visiting nearby country houses and gardens. This is a nature lover’s heaven – the South Downs, Ashdown Forest and Sussex and Kent coastlines are close by for day trips.
