The Experience

Quirky, homespun, colourful: feel like you’re staying in the home of a fashionable old friend, with bright art splashed on the walls and pretty bedrooms (some fresh from a spruce up) decked out in antiques. Bring four-legged friends to run around the grassy beer garden, where you can enjoy al fresco lunches.

They take food and drink seriously here. Supper is served in the white-walled restaurant, with stock pots simmering on an Aga and a little shop selling homemade piccalilli. Much of what you eat comes from a half-acre kitchen garden, with meat and game from the hills around you, plus a full vegan spread.
Breakfast is leisurely: read the morning papers, make your own toast, choose the full Welsh works. A road passes outside, but quietly at night, while lanes lead into the hills. Come to walk, ride, bike, canoe. Hay is close for books galore.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Brecon Beacons march west, the Black Mountains are close – there’s much to see (climb, hike, run) in this craggy corner of Wales. Adventure seekers can pedal on either mountain or road bike - or kayak over waterfalls. Try fishing on the Usk, paddling down the Wye via canoe, or pottering between the market towns of Abergavenny, Monmouth and Crickhowell. It’s a 15-minute drive to Brecon, and 20 minutes to Hay. You’ll need a car to make the most of it.

Local points of interest from Charles & Edmund Inkin

  • This is truly remarkable country and we have maps and guidebooks as well as information on specific walks based on our own experience. Even better is a wise old man of the hills to guide you.
  • Stretching westwards, the Beacons are challenging but reward you with awe-inspiring views, waterfalls and a splash of vertigo. Their Black Mountains cousins guard us from English marauders. Steeped in history they shelter great buildings like Llanthony.
  • Brecon hosts the 24th Regiment of Foot's museum, recounting the 48 hours of its cataclysmic defeat at Isandlwana and the subsequent miraculous 'victory' at Rorke's Drift. Hay-on-Wye is rightly famous for its book shops and Festival.
  • We are circled by two of Britain's great salmon and trout rivers. The Wye & Usk Foundation runs the two rivers and can organise fishing for our guests at remarkably low cost.
  • In our experience, those that don't fish, golf. The Borders courses are no fancy dans, but Llandrindod Wells, Cradoc and Kington each have their own charm.
  • There is some outstanding pheasant and partridge shooting near us. We can point you in the direction of those that matter. Or try some clay pigeon shooting just a couple of miles away at Woodland Park.

Introducing

Charles & Edmund Inkin

Edmund and Charles Inkin run The Felin Fach Griffin, The Old Coastguard and The Gurnard's Head. An idyllic upbringing on the family farm in Wales, with its dairy herd and kitchen garden, was formative for the brothers, who later fell in love with West Cornwall. They value first class ingredients, with menus shaped by the seasons, served by likeable staff.
