The Experience

Getting here is half the fun: little villages encircled by streams, country lanes that draw you in. It’s fantastically central, between Shropshire and Cheshire to the east and the Berwyn Mountains to the west, Snowdonia and the Cambrian Coast around 90 minutes away for longer rambles. There’s plenty on the doorstep too, alongside Llansantffraid’s three rivers or around Lake Vyrnwy.Budding little farmers will love the comings and goings of the tractors, and friendly host Christine will be delighted to introduce the cows and sheep and point you in the right direction for great local pubs – The Station Grill (three miles) has posh pub grub – or where to shop for top-notch produce to cook up in the little kitchen. Light the log burner, pour the wine and plan the next day’s adventures.

Location

The neighbourhood

Surrounded by the humpbacked hills around Welshpool (seven miles) – the nearest big town if you’re looking for proper supplies rather than just milk and eggs, which you’ll find in the little village of Llansantffraid (three miles). It’s got a few good pubs like Cross Keys Inn, with more in Llanfechain (six miles). Puff your way to the top of Breidden Hill for lovely views, or head to the Eunant and Rhiwargor waterfalls near Lake Vyrnwy (40 minutes).

Local points of interest from Christine Edwards

  • Lake Vyrnwy, Powis Castle, Chirk Castle, Llanfair Light Railway, Montgomeryshire Canal, British Ironworks are just some of the days out on offer within half an hour of the cottages.
  • The towns of Welshpool, Oswestry and Shrewsbury have lots to offer visitors from local produce markets, quirky shops, theatre, climbing walls, trampoline centres, plenty of cafes to relax in etc...
  • There is plenty of wildlife to see at the cottages such as the family of hares, kingfisher, curlews, red kites, yellowhammers etc...
  • Watch the organic Spring lambs in the surrounding fields or the cows grazing. Take the children to look at new born calves and lambs by arrangement.
  • Climb the Breidden to see the views of the area and Rodney's pillar or walk the nature reserve at Llanymynech hill and heritage site of the lime kilns and canal.

Introducing

Christine Edwards

The owners live in an imposing farmhouse over the road but are hands off when it comes to the cottages. Instead, the farm manager’s wife will greet you and be on call during your stay. Christine’s a jolly sort and immensely helpful – she can organise visits to see the animals and tell you about this first-prize winning organic farm.
