The Experience
The cottage is attached to the back of the main mill house which dates from around 1850. Downstairs is colourful and cosy with beams, slate flagstones, very comfy sofas, smart TV, a wood-burning stove and lovely views of the garden from the pretty window seat. The kitchen tucks in niftily under a huge beam and has everything you need for cooking, along with some basics to get cracking and a few local goodies.
Sleep soundly in the light, bright, well-proportioned bedroom, decorated with thought and flair – all you will hear is the gurgle of the river and birdsong. Find waffle gowns in the shower room. There’s a generous patio with table for outdoor dining, a grass area with streams and ponds running through it – at different times of year you’ll see ducks with their ducklings, kingfishers, dippers, herons and songbirds.
Llangadfan, two miles, has a pub which is fine for a pint and fish and chips.

Location
The neighbourhood
The feel is remote but you're only a short drive from the nearest village. This is a no through road so very quiet and the walks all around you are very special. Good pubs include the Cross Foxes on the way to Dolgellau (17 miles) and The Brigands Inn (10 miles). Ynyshir in Machynlleth is an excellent restaurant for a four to five-hour dining experience. In 50 minutes you can be in Aberdovey for sandy beaches.
Local points of interest from Susie Harrison
- Visit Lake Vyrnwy, a 5-mile-long reservoir fringed by forests and surrounded by mountains. Don’t miss the hour-long loop to the beautiful Rhiwargor waterfall.
- Hike the Minffordd Path to reach the summit of Cadair Idris. It’s a steep and strenuous climb, but the breathtaking views from the top are so worth it.
- Aberdyfi beach is an incredible place to take dogs and have a blast of sea air; a seemingly endless expanse of sand awaits.
- Book a table at the UK’s best restaurant, Ynyshir, where 2 Michelin-star chef Gareth Ward takes guests on a 4+ hour culinary journey, serving up creative fusions of Welsh ingredients and world flavours. Book ahead!
- Simply hunker down, light the fire, grab a book & bottle of red, and enter into blissful hibernation mode in this peaceful, idyllic part of Wales.
- Bring your binoculars to watch wagtails and woodpeckers in the valley; you might even spy otters in the river.

Introducing
Susie Harrison
Susie and Richard lived for many years in Brighton. During lockdown they nurtured the seed of an idea which was to live a more rural, quieter life and when they found the mill and the cottage they couldn't resist it. The previous owners had been there for 40 years so there was much to do and they've based their ideas around what they love when they go on holiday. They are around if you need advice.
River Cottage is set in an idyllic and charming location. It has an abundance of peace and tranquillity while at the same time providing comfort and convenience. Spending time here is an opportunity to switch off from the hurly-burly of everyday life and melt into the mindfulness of watching the river or wildlife all around you. Enjoy taking time to read, write, photograph or paint.
