The Experience
It feels delightfully remote and romantic pitching up at this renovated stone hay barn circled by mountains with a stream gurgling past, wildflower meadows, a rope swing for children (and the young at heart) and a duck pond. But civilisation isn’t far: for bookish delights head to Hay-on-Wye and for slap-up meals try the Felin Fach Griffin, both half an hour by car.
Your charming hideaway fans out across the first floor (beneath you is storage, one day it may be a games room) with a big porch for muddy togs then a warm and inviting open-plan space. You’ll be cosy after a blustery walk in the Black Mountains with the wood-burner roaring and supper bubbling on the stove in the sociable kitchen area.
Sit on the patio and watch for red kites, ravens and buzzards, listen out for the cuckoo – night skies will be star-filled. A master bedroom with stunning mountain views and a sweet twin share a bathroom where you’ll find soaps and hand lotion from a local lavender farm.

Michael took over the farmhouse and barn from his aunt and uncle in 2016. He lives between here and London where he works in finance. You let yourself in with the key safe and are completely independent but Sam and Monica are around if you need help with anything.
Tucked away in the shadow of the Black Mountains, enjoy hunkering down with a loved one or visiting as a family. The remote nature of the place invites you to explore, breath in the fresh country air and admire the magnificent panoramic mountain views. Crickhowell is within easy reach and boasts a charming independent high street.
