This lovely inn sits in a village that’s marooned in beautiful country. It’s a few miles back from the sea, with Barafundle Bay – one of the finest beaches in Britain – a very short drive away. You can pick up the coastal path, too, and follow it round past Stackpole Quay and St Govan’s Chapel to the cliffs at Linney Head, then the surfers at Freshwater West. It’s pure heaven, one of those sleepy areas you drop into for a couple of days and hardly use your car. As for the Stackpole, it’s a great little base – stylish and welcoming with tasty rustic food, perhaps deep-fried whitebait, rib of local beef, almond and hazelnut tart. Outside, the pub is drenched in honeysuckle and there’s a small garden to the front for a drop of Welsh ale in summer. Inside, you find low wooden ceilings, exposed stone walls, a hard-working wood-burner and four hand pumps at the slate bar. Super bedrooms have comfy beds, stripped floors, seaside colours and excellent bathrooms. All have sofabeds, two have velux windows for star gazing. Dogs and children are very welcome.
Everything about my visit to the Stackpole Inn was lovely! From the warm welcome and attentive service to the delicious vegetarian pasta dish, I couldn't fault it. Becky, one of the owners took the time to speak to me and tell me more about the pub, despite the busy service. My only regret is that I couldn't manage dessert due to the generous portion!
