The Experience
You could happily settle in, by the cobbled courtyard of the former Beaufort Arms (where Nelson stayed in 1802), and forget the car. Admire the Norman Monnow Bridge and the eclectic Museum. Browse the shops, book a meal, take in a show at the volunteer-run Edwardian theatre, find bric-a-brac, crafts and a street food market around the corner in the stately Shire Hall.
Heading into the countryside on foot or by boat is easy too: follow Offa’s Dyke Path down the gorgeous Wye Valley or deeper into Wales via White Castle to the Black Mountains – and you can canoe to Symonds Yat from the town boathouse.
Back at your studio, relax in front of the electric wood-burner with a book – maybe one of Louise’s translations – or watch passers-by through the lofty living room window; the courtyard gate is closed at night so it’s peaceful. And if you don’t feel like making breakfast it can be delivered.

After a very enjoyable, restful holiday I would highly recommend this unique, historical, stylish and well-appointed accommodation right in the heart of town but tucked away under the archway with parking very nearby. There is everything you need in Monmouth but also glorious countryside to explore and enjoy, if you want to go further afield.

Great stay. The apartment is central to the town and is tastefully furnished with everything that a guest could want. We really enjoyed going to the lovely old Savoy theatre on our first night, which was only around the corner. Lots of great places to eat and drink and a Waitrose and an M &S just a short walk down the high street. There is so much to do within a short driving distance that we would love to visit again.

This has been my fourth stay in Monmouth and by far the most exceptional. The accommodations were breathtaking. Lots of natural light beaming through arched windows. The shutters are original and have so much character. After a weary day of travel, the comfortable bed adorned with the softest linen sheets was a godsend. Beautiful and cozy furnishings and lots of chandeliers and well-placed lamps. I really didn't want to leave...

What a great location to enjoy the delights of Monmouth and the surrounding area. Centrally situated with lots of activity in the day but so quiet at night when the courtyard doors are closed. A really lovely, light, comfortable and well equipped flat in an historic building and perfect for our needs. Car parking is conveniently metres away. There was lots of useful information provided about shops, restaurants and local sights. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous space in a fantastic location. The Courtyard Studio is the ideal spot to mooch around Monmouth - would highly recommend the Marches deli for picnic provisions! The Studio is beautifully and simply decorated, and the original shutters add real character. Can’t wait to stay again! Thank you Louise.

Excellent location; just a short walk from the shops, pubs and restaurants around Agincourt Square but on a peaceful courtyard that provides a quiet retreat (especially at night, when the gate that leads directly to the square is locked). Rooms are tastefully decorated and well-furnished; bedroom and lounge being spacious and bright, and the kitchen well stocked with crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils. It comes with a free parking space which is close by and means that you don't have to worry about finding a space in the busy and (relatively) expensive public car park

The apartment is right in the centre of Monmouth, only minutes from all the pubs, restaurants and shops. That said, it is tucked away and very quiet, perfect for getting a good sleep. The apartment is ideally located for trips into the Forest of Dean and the surrounding area. Everything inside the apartment was spotless, and everything was very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay so much that we added an extra night! We would thoroughly recommend Louise and her lovely apartment.

Location
The neighbourhood
The Studio is in the hub of historic Monmouth. Come for the Music Festival (July/Aug) and shows at the Blake, or comedy at the Savoy Theatre (Wales’ oldest). There are weekly markets, good shops – independent butchers, bakers and booksellers – and eateries – from pubs, to the Bangladeshi Misbah. Offa’s Dyke Path crosses the town and follows the Wye Valley, past Tintern Abbey, a 20-minute drive; it’s 35 to Llanthony Priory. Serious castle country too.
Local points of interest from Louise Rogers Lalaurie
- Offa's Dyke Path and the Wye Valley Walk are a few minutes' walk from our door.
- Canoe the Wye from Monmouth Rowing Club, a five-minute walk away.
- Monmouth is the perfect base for touring the Forest of Dean, the Wye Valley and the Black Mountains. A string of award-winning country pubs lie within a 30-minute drive.
- Foodies will love The Marches deli on Monnow Street, selling Wye Valley and Forest of Dean game, cheeses, craft gins and more.
- Monmouth's fabulous independent shops and restaurants are seconds away on foot: atmospheric Church Street, Georgian Swan Court, weekend craft market and renowned street food on Agincourt Square. Our guest booklet gives full details.
- The beautiful Savoy Theatre on Church Street (just around the corner) is Wales's oldest active venue, and a fixture on the comedy circuit.

Introducing
Louise Rogers Lalaurie
Monmouth is in Louise’s blood and though she and Frédéric have been based in France for more than 25 years – she translating French fiction, he working in aviation – they love their foothold here and visit often. Louise’s parents ran the Foxhunter Café on Monnow Street for many years and her late father, John Rogers, is a well-known local artist whose works hang in the Studio.
A peaceful break in a unique, historical and stylish setting. The accommodation is well appointed and in the heart of Monmouth but tucked away behind the arch and gates of the courtyard. There is a wide choice of places to eat and drink as well as independent shops and historic sites within easy walking distance. I would heartily recommend this venue and would happily book again.
