The Experience
You’ll feel calm here, high up on one side of the Wye Valley, with the river winding its way through an ancient tree line below you. However bad-tempered the weather, it’s uplifting to sit by the large windows in the open-plan sitting room, wood-burner warming you, views straight across the valley.
A bunk room on the ground floor has a bookcase stuffed with books; up open wooden stairs is a neat, beamed double, warmed by the wood-burner flue, and overlooking the grand view – you’re facing east so sunrises will be lovely. Outside the front door you’ll find a little private patio with table and chairs for sunny meals and big views. Seren, next door, is a sweet retreat for two which you can also take if you need more space.
Hugh and Catherine live over the road and leave you logs, bottles of local beer, homemade biscuits and honey bee soap made in Usk. Hugh’s a keen mountain cyclist and will happily chat about routes, walks are straight from the door, you can canoe and fish, or take yourselves off to the local Michelin-starred pub.

Such a wonderful holiday house - the best views with so much wildlife (we loved the fox and deer most evenings). Really cosy and comfortable inside and felt so remote and quiet. Completely relaxing and would love to go back. The restaurant down in the village is walkable too if you don’t mind a hill - we had the tasting menu which is first class. Highly recommended

What an amazing location for a holiday! The Donkey Shed is a lovely self catering house; beautifully designed, thoughtfully furnished, comfortable and clean. And then to top it off the view of the Wye Valley is breath-taking! We particularly enjoyed dawn when you look out over the top of the clouds filling the valley below, or the early evening when deer grazed in the near-by fields, or during the day watching the swallows gracefully dancing overhead. Catherine and Hugh are so welcoming and friendly, and were really accommodating.

To the delightful owners, Catherine and Hugh, the Donkey Shed is their pride and joy - and you can absolutely see why. Stylishly designed to make the most of the space, it has floor-to-ceiling windows from which to enjoy rural views across the Wye Valley. Comfortable and warm (plenty of logs provided for the log burner) and very well-equipped, the Donkey Shed is immaculately presented and spotlessly clean with lots of little touches to make you feel welcome. We have stayed in many self-catering cottages over the years and this is well up there with the best of them.

We are just back from a delightful and relaxing stay in The Donkey Shed. Everything about the experience was terrific, from the initial communication with Catherine and Hugh, to the delightful cozy Bedroom, comfy Sitting Room, stunning view through the incredible arched window and the splendid bathroom (the best we have ever had in a holiday cottage). You should go - the hosts are lovely, the location sublime, peaceful and secluded, the cottage cozy and welcoming, the views breath-taking. But don't go when I want to go back - which I do!

I had this little place on my wish list for some time and it did not disappoint. Wonderfully remote, a perfectly formed little house with the most amazing view. The owners had really thought of everything you might need. Our boys loved the woods and open space. The toys were an absolute treat and they still talk about the trip now. We had an absolute blast!!

We enjoyed a lovely stay at the Donkey Shed. Catherine and Hugh were lovely hosts and the ‘shed’ itself was nicely appointed with fantastic views of the Wye valley. We used as a base to explore Chepstow, Monmouth, Symonds Yat, Newport, Forest of Dean and Gloucester. Lovely!

Our second visit in a year, this time hiring the Donkey Shed and Seren to accommodate a combination of family and freinds for a special celebration. We loved it just as much as at the first visit.

Everything about our visit was a joy. The accommodation is homely & relaxing, very thoughtfully furnished & equipped to a high standard . There are fabulous walks along the river & through the forests all around. If it rains just sit back, relax with a glass of wine & look at the views out of the full height gable windows. Night-time storms are particularly spectacular. If you need any assistance the owners are very helpful & friendly.

Loved it! I can't recommend enough. If you want to get away from it all and enjoy nature and peaceful walks and environment, this is your place. We came here with our 7 year old for a half term escape. The house was spotless. Had everything we could possibly need including a lovely welcome pack of local ales, milk, eggs and cookies. The house was very comfortable and cosy especially with the woodfire stove which we lit up in the evening. But what really made our stay special is those views! We saw all kind of birds, squirrels, deer... was so beautiful. Just what we needed. We'll be back! :)

Stayed at the Donkey Shed before Christmas with my Husband and Toddler. The barn itself is perfectly formed with everything you could need from a holiday home. It was cozy and welcoming and the Christmas decorations really added to its charm. We loved its location and the amazing view and were lucky enough to see a number of deer. The Wye Valley has lots to entertain both adults and children alike and there are plenty of nice Pubs, attractions and walks within 15mins drive. Couldn’t recommend more.

A perfect week at the Donkey Shed: warm welcome from Catherine and Hugh, a mine of cycling information; perfect setting, so peaceful and the view over the valley is stunning; the cottage is perfect, the cosiest upstairs, the best shower, properly equipped kitchen, maps, guides, and the enormous top to floor window overlooking the misted valley - and the stars on a clear night, stunning! Our week was made perfect by our electric bikes. Heaven. So many forest trails as daring or as peaceful as you wish and keeping right off main roads, great pubs and amazing local history. We will be back!

We spent a week at The Donkey She’d and didn’t want to leave...I mean we REALLY want to leave! To wrench ourselves away from the view, the peace, the wildlife and the cosiness was not easy! We wanted peace and a connection with nature and that’s exactly what we got...and more. Catherine and Hugh are perfect hosts: available and friendly and the cottage, buried deep on the wooded hillside was just perfect.

We had a wonderful week at the Donkey Shed. We were made so welcome and thank you for the fabulous biscuits. The views are stunning and we whiled away many happy hours gazing at the mist or watching deer walk past. The weather was good to us and we visited local nature reserves and were very lucky to see a family of wild boar at Nagshead Reserve. The Donkey Shed is the perfect place to spend time as a couple or family. Thank you for making us so welcome and we're sure we'll be back again.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Everything has been elegantly and thoughtfully designed, from the fantastic high windows to the book selection to the kitchen full of lovely things. There's fantastic walking and the Whitebrook restaurant is perfect for a special occasion - we also spent hours staring happily out of the window.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're down a narrow lane (which forms a section of the Wye Valley Walk) through beech woods carpeted with wild daffodils and bluebells in the spring. Seren and Donkey Shed overlook the river and there's wildlife spotting from the sofas (deer, swallows in the summer, buzzards, foxes, badgers). There are great walks from the door - head down the hill and follow the river to The Boat Inn.
Local points of interest from Catherine Marsh
- Step out the door and onto the Wye Valley Walk. Explore ancient woodlands, carpets of bluebells, wildflower meadows, autumn leaves and frosty winter mornings. Head down to the river to join Offa's Dyke. Head up to Beacon View and take in the Brecon Beacons
- Monmouthshire has some great pubs and Michelin starred restaurants. The Whitebrook Restaurant is 10 minutes by car (or a lovely walk), The Pig & Apple, The Black Bear Usk, Walnut Tree, Bell at Skenfrith and Kingstone Brewery are all within reach
- Well situated for Abergavenny Food Festival, Green Man and Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival. Visit Tintern Abbey or explore the castles of the Welsh Marches. Also a great spot for taking in Monmouthshire's beautiful and inspiring open gardens
- The Black Mountains are 35 minutes away, the Brecon Beacons are 1 hour. Please ask for some of our favourite routes - walking or mountain biking
- Canoe the River Wye - there are several canoe hire outlets in Monmouth who also provide guiding. Local fishing. Road cycling - including the alpine Lydart ascent from Monmouth. Mountain Biking - home of Dirt magazine, ask Hugh about local singletrack
- Experience a unique blend of foraging and spirit-distilling at the award winning Silver Circle Distillery. Go Ape in the Forest of Dean or get lost in Puzzlewood, climb Symonds Yat Rock and get back to nature with Forest Bushcraft!

Introducing
Catherine Marsh
Catherine and her husband live on a smallholding with beautiful views over the Wye Valley. They've loved welcoming guests to stay at the Donkey Shed in this special spot. Recently they decided to convert another outbuilding to form Seren so that they can share it with more people! They would love to welcome you here for some fresh air and relaxation. They live across the lane so there is an equal share of privacy and availability. They love the outdoors and are more than happy to offer recommendations of our favourite local spots.
Our second visit! We love the Donkey Shed! The situation is beautiful and the views are wonderful. We like walking from the house . The house is well equipped but feels homely and comfortable. The herbs outside are useful too. Catherine and Hugh are great hosts. They are never intrusive but available if you need help as I did to get the oven to work! I particularly enjoy the little touches like flowers and grasses in vases and the soap which is made locally and smells lovely. The welcome gifts included eggs, local Beer and home made cookies. Altogether a wonderful place for a break.
