The Experience

From the road the cottage looks small but it is far from it. Whitewashed walls give a bright feel, comfy sofas surround a knockout wood-burner in the grand fireplace, there’s a desk for working, a separate dining area and lots of books, DVDs and games.

The kitchen, with a fresh modern feel, is just off the dining room so cooks will still feel part of the action and they’ll find all the kit they need plus plenty of prepping space. You’re left a plentiful welcome basket of tasty local things including Welsh biscuits and crisps and locally-made jams. Upstairs bedrooms are at separate ends of the cottage – all with organic cotton bed linen, Welsh blankets and views over the garden; one has a glimpse of the sea.

The sheltered natural garden has mature trees, uneven ground, hammocks and a fire bowl, the birdsong is joyous and as night falls the stars, and the bats, appear. This is a Dark Sky Area so on clear nights you’re in for a treat.

Reviews

Visiting this hidden gem of a property was a delight. Tucked away in the rural countryside it gives you peace and tranquillity but is within easy reach of so many activities including the gorgeous coastline, the list is endless. The owners have given so much thought into making this spacious but cosy cottage feel so welcoming and homely. Every comfort and convenience seemed to be thought of.

Location

The neighbourhood

At the back of the garden there's a gate onto a mountain path – here you'll find the wild goats. The nearest village is Llandbedr (2.5 miles) where you'll find a little huddle of shops and two pubs. Harlech (20 mins) has the super Y Groser for Welsh cheese, wine, pastries and pies. Head to Barmouth for good fish and chips, catch a steam train, fish, climb, paddle board, visit historical sites.

Local points of interest from Emma Wakefield

  • Gelliwaen is in the heart of the 'wild and beautiful’ Rhinog mountains. From Cwm Bwchan and the Roman Steps (where wild goats roam) to the peaks of Rhinog Fach and Rhinog Fawr there are walks for everyone.
  • Benar Beach - a long stretch of unspoilt golden sand where you can swim with a view of the mountains is a short drive away. Morfa Bychan and Llandanwg are two more beautiful beaches close by.
  • 20 minutes away is the world heritage site of Harlech Castle. In the town you'll find lovely Welsh produce from Y Groser, textiles from Cae Du Designs, award-winning ice cream at Hufenfa'r Castell and the steepest street in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Wild swimming; from the river two minutes from the front door, to the mountain lake in Cwm Bwchan to Llyn Hywel nestled amongst the peaks of Rhinog Fach to Nantcol Waterfalls, a short walk away there are so many stunning places to discover.
  • Ffestiniog Railway is the oldest independent railway company in the world. The steam train takes you on a 13½ mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, climbing over 700 feet into the mountains.
  • Wander round Portmeirion - an Italianate village designed by Clough Williams-Ellis - who is reported to have designed and built the huge chimney and sun-room at Gelliwaen. You can also visit Clough Ellis's house, Plas Brondanw.
