The Experience

Put quite simply this place, in an AONB between the moors and the sea, should be on prescription for most of us these days. There’s no central heating but the Aga keeps you cosy along with two wood-burning stoves. The Aga (which you boil the kettle and cook on, along with a little gas hob) heats water for one of the candle-lit bathrooms, one of the wood-burners supplies hot water for the other. Electricity is via solar panels so lights won’t glare and there’s no distracting WiFi or telly.

Sash windows let in bucolic views, there are Penguin books to borrow, games to play, a big kitchen table, two sitting rooms and a garden from which you’ll hear only sheep, birdsong and the stream as it hurries along. Stride out into the Celtic Rain Forest, swim in silent lakes, breathe pure air, spot rare flora and fauna, enjoy big skies – starlit at night.

Sleep deeply in the peace, enjoy a blessed release from technology, let older children connect with nature.

I came away from Garth Gell wanting to go back & experience all that I had seen. Once you have navigated the track and taken in the lush, stunning panoramic views, you will immediately start to unwind. The farmhouse is cosy and feels very homely with an eclectic choice of decor done by the owner Kathleen, giving it character. This is the place to totally detox from everything & have an adventure.

We spent a truly magical week at Garth Gell. The location is just incredible, with unspoiled countryside views and complete privacy. The house itself was well described by the listing; what it lacks in mod cons it more than makes up for in rustic charm and tranquility. A very special place, and one of the most unique and rewarding weeks we've spent away. We'd love to go back!

Garth Gell must be one of the most special places I have ever spent time. There is something magical about the beautiful, peaceful location and it's made even more welcoming by the owners tasteful interior aesthetic, comfy beds and all the necessary bits and pieces to make ones stay comfortable. A stay here is nourishing for the soul and once I'm there I wish I never had to return to real life! Garth Gell is held dearly in the hearts of all my family.

You're steeped in a landscape of ferns, heathers, dry stone walls, woods and rolling hills for fabulous walks and climbs. For a pint with stunning views head to George 111 at Penmaenpool, 1.4 miles. Barmouth is a 17-minute drive for a grand beach, restaurants and shops. The market town of Dolgellau is a similar distance and Harlech has a lovely beach and the castle.
