The Experience

The steeply wooded Conwy valley snakes down to this stone and slate property set back and above the road in the National Park, and the walks are wonderful. Stride to the village, or to Conwy Falls or simply stroll down to the river to cool your feet on a hot day. You arrive to homemade cakes and a cup of tea which you can take in the sitting room by a warming wood-burner.

Inside has an upbeat traditional feel with polished antiques and many pictures by the Betws-y-coed Victorian artists who once lived here. Bedrooms are colourful and comfortable and one of the bathrooms comes with a double-ended roll top tub and views of Lledr Valley. Wake to porridge, a full Welsh breakfast with homemade hash browns, soda bread, haddock or a vegetarian option. Vegans can ask for special sausages made in the village.

Above all you’ll know you’re in Wales. Your hosts’ enthusiasm for this glorious part of the world is infectious, so do explore!

Reviews

This is a lovely place to stay. Central to so many things to see and close to the village. The welcome was warm and the beds very comfortable. The breakfasts were excellent with a good choice. The rooms facing the front have incredible views into the valley beyond which in its autumn colour is truly impressive. I would recommend Pengwern to anyone thinking of a break in this area.

We had a lovely stay at Pengwern. The B&B is brilliantly located for exploring North Wales with some great walks and river swim spots on the doorstep. Gwawr couldn’t have been more accommodating during our stay and made a delicious breakfast every morning as well as a very welcome cup of tea on arrival!

Poppy, Salisbury

What a fabulous B&B! Great location with lots of good walks nearby, comfy room, delicious breakfast, and lovely hosts. Thank you to Gwawr and Ian.

Ruth, Manchester

Truly wonderful stay at Pengwern Country House. My partner has celiac disease Gwawr and Ian went above and beyond to meet his needs and make sure he was well supplied. Breakfast is outstanding with beautiful views of the valley. This house has a fascinating history, our room was very comfortable, hosts are very welcoming. Can highly recommend and very much hope to return soon. Diolch.

A great B and B in north Wales. They made us feel special from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The breakfast was excellent and knowledge of the area great. Our time there was filled up with gardens, castles and hikes. The restaurant down the road comes highly recommended as well

Ian, Malmesbury, South Africa

Lovely cosy stay with great hospitality and plenty of local advice. A Welsh breakfast will set you up for the day!! Thank you.

We had another fantastic stay at Pengwern Country House recently. The rooms are luxurious and very comfortable. The choice and quality of breakfast is excellent - an ideal start for a day in the hills! Gwawr and Ian are great hosts and have lots of local knowledge of places to walk, eat, drink etc. This was our 4th time at Pengwern and we'll definitely return.

Justin, Halifax

An experience to repeat. Nothing to relate negatively as the hosts are extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were generous and quite professionally prepared. Our room was a treat with magnificent views of the lledr valley. Certainly a great base to return to when tired and relax in the large drawing room before retiring to the sheets for a good nights sleep. No problem with parking the car as plenty of space. We look forward to knocking on their door when next in that lovely part of the world., and enjoying those breakfasts before a day of relaxed expectation in North Wales.

Mike, Salisbury

Fantastic stay, Gwawr and Ian were super lovely, knowledgeable hosts. Delicious breakfasts, deep baths, comfy beds, great location, and lots of little extras all made a perfect weekend, would highly recommend.

Claire

Pengwern was just lovely. The location was ideal for natural beauty and adventure. The owner Gwawr was very accommodating. Could not have asked for more. The breakfast selection was vast and fresh. The food quality was brilliant and cooked beautifully. The sleeping facilities were super comfortable and the living surroundings covered everything. We as a group would highly recommend any visitors to stay at Pengwern as you will not be disappointed.

Daniel, London

Pengwern is a lovely place, and Ian and Gwawr are great hosts. Our three night visit had been booked by our son as a (slightly belated) birthday celebration for Barbara, so out came the breakfast candle and "happy birthday"! Gwawr produced first class vegan breakfasts for us, even though not listed on the standard menu. She showed an interest in what we were doing, and had lots of helpful advice about Betws-y-coed, the area and walking options. Our room was lovely and comfortable. The view was incredible. We thoroughly recommend staying there if you can. John and Barbara

My partner and I went for a three nights break at Pengwern and cannot recommend it more highly. We stayed in the George Wightwick (Superking) room, overlooking the valley, which was beautiful and a little quirky. Gwawr is a wonderful host; she is very friendly, personable, made us instantly feel at home and prepared fantastic breakfasts! Whatever local activities you are looking to do during your stay, Gwawr is very knowledgable and can point you in the right direction. Thank you for such a wonderful stay, Cate and Morgan x

Cate, ASHTEAD

Gwawr is a wonderful host, making us feel very welcome. The house is beautiful with each bedroom having its own distinctive feel. It was lovely to come back from our walks to the large sitting room with its warm fire. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfasts which were made with first class ingredients and there was plenty of choice.

Introducing

Gwawr & Ian Mowatt

Welsh is Gwawr's first language so she'll happily tell you how to pronounce her name! Both she (who loves nature and paints as a hobby) and Ian (an experienced mountain walker) are from the area. They love their guests to enjoy a taste of the real Welsh experience. They know climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is a captivating draw but they also know there is much, much more to enjoy in this beautiful countryside.
