The Experience

Small, snug and beautifully furnished with pops of earthy colour, a roaring wood-burner and a window seat for reading and gazing. Add to that a mezzanine bedroom framed by hefty beams and a pretty stained glass window, a bathroom with a big tub, and a neat kitchen with a sweep of beech worktop, and two people will be happy holed up here whatever the weather.

Outside are big hills, a rushing river valley and endless walks through a blissfully tourist-free slice of rural Wales. There’s a pub on the river, Towy Bridge Inn, a couple of miles away or you can pick up delicious organic produce from Wright’s Food and whip up supper at home, cosy in front of the fire or out on the terrace on balmy evenings.

The owners are experimenting with regenerative farming practices and they’ve already seen an increase in biodiversity across their 75 acres: you may spot spotted heath orchids, waxcaps, hawk moths and dark green fritillary butterflies.

We had a wonderful stay in New York. The area is beautiful with wild moorland or farming valley walks starlight from the cottage without needing to get in the car. The cottage itself is gorgeous, cosy, comfy and very well equipped for cooking in. Thank you Tanya and Duncan for the warm welcome - we had a great stay hunkering down!

I had such a glorious time at Penstacan New York and will certainly be back. The cottage is exquisitely designed and so well thought out, providing every comfort. There were wonderful walks, both on the property and nearby and I loved exploring the local area. Such a great place to relax and regenerate.

Entering New York Cottage is like meeting an old friend again. It gently hugs you. Inside, the room is intimate, but achieves a sense of spaciousness as well. I could have easily closed the door on the outside world for a week, but the Cambrian Mountains are literally at the back and mid-Wales has some of the most beautiful and varied countryside in Britain.

The neighbourhood

You're on the edge of a village and three miles from the nearest market town, Llandovery. It sits on the edge of the Brecon Beacons and has a clutch of independent shops, cafés, pubs and a farmers' market held on the last Saturday of every month. Wild swimming in lakes and rivers abounds, Pen y Fan is popular and the walking is sublime.

A plethora of pretty market towns with antiques, galleries and crafts. Plus 2 of the best gardens in Wales - The Botanic Gardens of Wales & Aberglasney. Gorgeous estuary towns Laugharne and Llansteffan are on the doorstep or go west for secret beaches.

Tanya and Duncan live in the small farmhouse close by. They both worked in London in the public sector before the move here although Tanya grew up in Wales. They are rightly proud of what they have achieved in the restoration of the buildings and the ongoing partnership they are achieving with nature through their land restoration project.
