The Experience
Stylistically, this is a one-off: a boutique British take on Spain’s ‘paradores’ – the convents, castles and other historic buildings converted into lodgings by the Spanish state. This one’s set in downtown Cardiff, though, lovingly converted by hardcore Hispanophiles the Morgan family, and offering nine artful bedrooms above their convivial Iberian grill, Asador 44.
It feels rather like a restaurant with rooms: duck along a maze of narrow corridors to discover your own tranquil boudoir, complete with ornately carved bedhead, terracotta urns, authentic Spanish tiles in the en suite. The spaces are snug but the important things are roomy: super beds throughout; thumping walk-in showers wide enough to lie down in.
This is a grown-up, treaty place, where the service is hands-off (but friendly) and the food exceptional, whether you’re feasting on flame-cooked Welsh lamb or sipping a self-made cocktail on the rooftop patio.

We think you'll love
- The cosy feel and surprising Spanish styling – you're in the thudding heart of the city but could be a million miles away
- The (included) breakfasts: Iberian inflected, inventive and served in the hotel's atmospheric Asador restaurant
- Helping yourself to Cava and Mediterranean nibbles from the honesty bar for pre-prandial drinks on the sunny roof terrace
You should know
- Parking is expensive at the NCP car park across the road (or it's a walk to somewhere cheaper)
- The rooms are set among steepish staircases and narrow mazy corridors, so it's not for those who struggle with mobility
- The hotel doesn't really welcome children, but will make an exception if you'd like to bring a cot

Location
The neighbourhood
The setting couldn't be more convenient – on a side street close to the Principality Stadium. It's a five-minute walk to the Norman battlements of Cardiff Castle, your gateway to Bute Park, lovely for a riverside meander. Stroll to the National Museum Cardiff, strong on dinosaurs and Impressionists, or just relax into the city's fretwork of Victorian arcades, full of indie boutiques and cafés.

Introducing
The Team At Parador 44
The Morgans – brothers Owen and Tom, and sister Natalie Isaac – developed their adoration of all things Español on family touring holidays as children and opened their first tapas bar in their native Cowbridge two decades ago. Both Parador 44 and its Asador restaurant exude the Morgans' deep knowledge of Spanish food culture, and in 2021 they published their first cookbook, Bar 44 Tapas y Copas.
An authentic Spanish inn in a Cardiff side street? Seeing is believing at Parador 44, a boutique take on the Iberian country idyll, with nine characterful bedrooms decked in timber and terracotta, complete with ornately carved beds and bespoke Spanish tiles. The downstairs restaurant, Asador 44, is a copper-lit cavern specialising in dry-aged Spanish sirloin and Welsh lamb, cooked over fire.
