The Experience

There’s romance in this wild spot between loch and sea, no humps in the land to disturb the light, no people or traffic to puncture the stillness and much fun to be had without straying far: wild swimming or paddleboarding from your own stretch of white sand, hiking to St Kilda’s Viewing Point (30 minutes), fishing in the loch opposite from a rowboat, rock-pooling and foraging, bird watching or simply lying still to listen for the strange call of rare corncrakes, which fills the air on a spring night.

Return to a house that’s built for entertaining, with a huge living room and a long wooden table for companionable meals, a screen that pulls down (of course) and a hidden projector connected to a smorgasbord of online streaming. There’s also a library of over a thousand books, two wood-burning stoves and unlimited logs so if the weather is hurling itself at the windows then you can stay put happily.

You’ll find a drinks shelf with a choice of malts among other things, so pour yourself a wee dram, get comfy on the west-facing patio and watch a myriad of stars appear one by one – there’s not an ounce of light pollution up here.

The School House is just wonderful, very stylish, perfectly equipped to the highest standards and a truly special place to stay in. Its location on north uist is perfect, very close to the wonderful beaches. We fell in love with the house and island 🩵💙💚

Maja, Zurich

Lovely house, renovated to a very high standard. The owner has created relaxing and spacious accommodation - perfect for a large family group or group of friends. Everything is very tastefully finished. Outstanding views from many different parts of the property. Thoughtfully equipped with everything you’re likely to need and we found the owner very trusting and easy to deal with. Everything has been very well designed and thought out with many personal touches. Definitely one of the best rental properties we’ve ever stayed in - a really great experience.

Tigharry Schoolhouse has been the most beautiful and stylish house we have ever stayed in. It has such lovely and spacious living areas, with everything carefully thought out. The projector was superb for watching the Olympics and films. The kitchen has lots of space with everything good quality. The house is well situated for exploring local beautiful beaches and places further afield. The information provided is really useful and helped plan our week. Even the welcome food pack was superb! Thank you for a lovely week!

Tom, Bristol

A beautifully converted former school with underfloor heating and tremendously well equipped. A short walk away from an RSPB reserve and a short drive from the pub, which served evening meals on most nights, and a local store. Surrounded by bird life and close to stunning beaches. Quite a special place.

Alison, Durham

I found this house online when looking for somewhere to spend my 60th birthday with all my family. It surpassed our expectations and we are still talking about the house, the facilities, the decor two years later. All future holiday cottages have been judged against this property and so far none have matched it. We had a wonderful week there; beautiful deserted beaches which our dog adored. Very thoughtful touches from the owner and immaculately clean. Would love to return one day.

Where do you start … amazing conversion of a Schoolhouse in a fantastic location. The house is so comfortable and very well equipped. The house, with its mix of vintage and new furniture feels like a home from home. The gadgets, from the projector to the sound system were great. With the best quality bedding and appliances this is definitely a high spec and very special place to stay. The welcome hamper was luxurious and the numerous guides, maps and information provided was amazing. The location - 5/10 mins between 2 beaches was fantastic. We absolutely loved it !

We had a wonderful week in this breathtaking house. There is so much space and light and everything is beautifully curated, with so many thoughtful touches. The things that can sometimes annoy or detract were absent: the beds were big and deep, the showers were hot and powerful and the sofas were huge. We enjoyed the welcoming wine and snacks and were very restrained with the complimentary local gin. North Uist was fascinating and the beaches were wonderful. We hope to visit again soon.

Wow what a beautifully restored and decorated house. A lot of thought went into making this an amazing place. I will go back. Location perfect for walks, beaches and peace and quiet. But please don't tell anyone about this place :-).

Maria, Ambleside

A beautifully fitted out base in a true get away location. Every small detail has been thought through leaving space to relax and unwind. For lovers of nature, literature, music and beauty, worthy of a long stay.

Fantastic accommodation. The schoolhouse has everything you might want. We really enjoyed watching films on the home cinema, played the piano, used the bikes and surf boards. The nearby beaches are incredible, and there are plenty of places to walk and cycle. Just hope for reasonable weather!

We are a family of five(youngest 17) and we visited the Outer Hebrides during the Summer. We knew the weather may be unpredictable and decided a spacious property might be a good idea if we were going to spend time in it. The weather was not kind to us but thankfully it didn't really matter as we all enjoyed staying at The Schoolhouse so much. The property has so much space and so well equipped that we really had nothing to wish for. The conversion is superb, it seemed that everything had been considered and planned to the finest detail. The owner has been so helpful before we visited. Great!

I visited Tigharry Schoolhouse with seven friends and we had an incredible holiday. The house has been beautifully renovated with amazing attention to detail. All of the bedrooms were extremely comfortable, both stoves were lovely and cosy (and very quick to light) and we enjoyed use of all the mod cons (projector/music system). We did a lot of cooking throughout our stay and the kitchen worked wonderfully. The nearby beaches are beautiful and we even managed a midnight dip! I really can't recommend the schoolhouse enough. It's a very special place and made for an unforgettable trip!

Tigharry Schoolhouse is a living, crafted amidst far stretched islands(Hebrides). The house is stunningly bright and well-furnished consisting of all the necessary amenities. The living & dining areas are beautifully decorated and surrounded by plenty of indoor games and instruments & has one of the best libraries I have ever seen in a house. My stay at Tigharry schoolhouse was exceptional. The weather was mostly sunny and there were lots of opportunity for outdoor activities and scenic walks/Drives. The guidebook is well organised to make the most of outdoor/indoor stay. P.S Kind Host.

Madhav, Ahmedabad

Thanks - we really enjoyed our stay. The house was beautifully furnished in a stunning, quiet location. We were blessed with good weather and went wildlife spotting, walking on the hills and on the beaches, and sea kayaking; but if the weather had been poor the house offers more than enough for relaxation with book, television, radio, and games. The pub down the road is also good. I'm sure we will return in the future.

Chris, Ware, Herts

Tigharry Schoolhouse is a wonderfully welcoming and incredibly well decorated place; Every single room offers you amazing sceneries and provides you the optimum confort. The surroundings are breathtaking , and yet , you are always looking forward to enjoying this beautiful house !

We really enjoyed the property and its offering. The welcome book is well organised and informative about the local amenities. It provides a true home away from home feeling.

Location

The neighbourhood

North Uist, a paradise for wildlife, sits between Harris and Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. It's a landscape of peat bogs and lochans, big skies, white sand beaches and wildflowers in spring. There's a shop two miles from the house for petrol, local papers and basic food, and The Westford Inn, North Uist's only pub, is six miles away. In the summer, there's a pop-up food shack on the beach serving fresh crab. Day trips by ferry from here can take you to Barra for a spot of sea kayaking, or Harris/Lewis to see ancient standing stones. A five-minute drive will take you to a surfing beach called Hosta – fast becoming a hot spot for wave seekers.

Local points of interest from Pierson

  • Find your inner twitcher! RSPB Balranald is a 15-minute walk from the house - take one of the weekly guided walks to learn all about the island’s avian life and how to best spot the elusive and endangered Corncrake - don't forget your binoculars!
  • Take a water-based wildlife safari in pursuit of pods of dolphins, whales or sea eagles, visiting islands or coves only accessible by boat. Or book a once in a lifetime trip to the remote St Kilda archipelago to marvel at this double world heritage site.
  • Fish for salmon and trout on one of North Uist's hundreds of lochs; take in a round of golf at South Uist’s renowned Tom Morris designed course with views across the Atlantic; visit the excellent community mill project, Uist Wool, on Grimsay.
  • Beach hop the north and west of the island - Hosta, Malacleit, Clachan Sands, Berneray, (to name a few) all have pristine white-sand bays. Forage, rockpool, fly a kite, paddle board, surf, swim...find your own favourite, deserted spot.
  • Visit the chambered cairn & the Uists only stone circle at Barpa Langass, both thought to be around 5000 years old. Or find the remains of Udal's ancient, remote wheelhouse that provides evidence of continuous settlement from the Neolithic period.
  • Go in search of wild ponies and the ghosts of both Bonnie Prince Charlie and the SS Politician (the boat of Whisky Galore fame!) on the island of Eriskay with its picture perfect bay and one of the remotest football pitches in Europe!
