The Experience

Harris has its own character – rather wild, very few trees and the sort of white sandy beaches you might see in the Caribbean. You’re surrounded by wildlife and should spot seals, otters, dolphins, Minke whales, thousands of waders at low tide, corncrakes in spring and, soaring above you, white-tailed eagles – the largest UK bird of prey. In the porch you’ll find a telescope for stargazing on clear nights and in winter you may see the Northern Lights.

There’s tartan and tweed indoors, with lots of local art, an open fire in the sitting room presided over by a painting of a sweet Scottie dog, and a second seating area in the dining room with wood-burning stove and Harris tweed curtains. It’s got a cosy, comfortable feel, the kitchen has gear for even elaborate cooking and there are lots of books and games. Bedrooms (one downstairs) are traditional.

Sprawl in the garden on sunny days, or pack a picnic and head for endless fine beaches.

Reviews

Seaside house is the perfect place to stay if you want to explore Harris. It is very warm and beautifully equipped. Jo has thought of everything you might need if the weather isn't great and you need to hunker down out of the wind and the rain! The cottage is dog friendly and Luskentyre beach and all of the surrounding beaches are amazing for long walks. We highly recommend it.

Rebecca, London

My family of four plus our dog have just returned from a super week at Seaside Cottage. We feel very lucky to have stayed in such a lovely cottage in an idyllic location. Seaside Cottage was warm, homely and had a very welcoming feel about it. Everything we could need was provided. We hope to come again. Thank you Jo for sharing your lovely home with us.

Clare, Worcestershire

Had a wonderful stay in this lovely house. It was warm and cosy, tastefully decorated, comfy beds and good showers. The location is fantastic, so close to Luskentyre Beach. Jo was a great host, very easy to communicate with. Would highly recommend.

Mandy, Oxford

Fantastic location and excellent accommodation - highly recommended . Very helpful and easy booking.

Colin, Isle of Man

Such an incredible little cottage in the most stunning part of the Isle of Harris. The owner Jo is amazing, with great communication and advice during our stay. This is not the first time we stayed here, we are repeat visitors for good reason.

Stu, Hereford

A great property in a truly exceptional location. Just a couple of minutes walk from one of the greatest beaches on the planet and within reach of all that the island has to offer. The property is very well appointed with everything we needed for our stay and had more than enough of space for the five of us (plus dog). The addition of a decent telescope is a real treat and allowed us to view the moons of Jupiter one clear evening. The host was very quick to respond to questions and provided excellent information prior to our stay.

Seaside House made for a perfect & very cosy stay for my partner & I's visit to Harris with our dog. The place is warm with comfortable & beautifully decorated living spaces, and a very well equipped kitchen. The Bose speaker was a fun surprise as we'd brought an identical one with us. It was great to have an enclosed garden for our pup & the location was ideal for exploring all of Harris as well as a couple of days where we ventured further up to Lewis, once for a stunning walk around Tolsta Head (1.5h drive). Luskentyre beach (visible from the house) is a convenient short walk down the road.

Rebecca, Evesham

Our family of 4 plus dog had a wonderful stay at Seaside House, Luskentyre. The accommodation itself is top quality and such a homely, relaxing environment. The house is opposite the much acclaimed, most beautiful Luskentyre beach with miles and miles of surrounding stunning coastal colours and scenery. Harris really is mesmerising with loads to see and do. We loved it so much we've already booked Seaside House for next year!

Shirley, Glasgow

What an absolutely gem of a place, very quite and peaceful place. The house is located with easy walking distance to the beach. Highly recommend place to relax and recharge your batteries.

Andy, Stalybridge

Fantastic location with plenty to do on the island whatever the weather. The cottage is so welcoming, got everything we needed, lovely and cosy to come back to especially if it's a wet or cold day as there are two fires but for us the cottage was plenty warm enough without. Rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. Stunning views all around cottage, Estuary and sea to the front, mountain to the rear. Lovely walks where the mountain runs down to the beautiful beach with crystal clear water, loved snorkeling with the wildlife. Will definately come back, love Luskentyre!

Lisa, Bridgnorth

Lovely cosy cottage in a beautiful location. Access to magnificent beach for walks and fantastic views.

Jeremy, Bradford

2023 will be our 5th visit to Seaside House. A gem of a cottage in a very special place. We always visit in May but would love to go over the winter months as the cottage is so cosy and comfortable with everything to make it a home from home. Situated at Lukentyre it is central for exploring both Harris and Lewis and even trips to the Uists, but also perfect for beachcombing on the beautiful Luskentyre sands (minutes walk away) or climbing Ben Luskentyre behind the cottage. Book a stay you won't be disappointed.

Margo, Galashiels

Fabulous house , 5mins walk to beach but with great beach and sea views , highly recommend

Irene, Dundee

Seaside House has been a gem of a find. If you are looking for a tastefully furnished, well equipped and cosy crofter's cottage near one of the best beaches of the UK - then this one is hard to beat. The owner has a genuine concern that her guests have the best experience of the cottage, the isle of Harris and the nearby islands. A walk along the beach is exhilarating. The scenery is spectacular. Lovely sunsets and sometimes - the northern lights. Luskentyre is a special place - it's for those who want to get away from it all.

Ann, Livingston

Come for a week, or even two. By the time you get all the way here you really won't want to leave. So much to do: wonderful beaches, birdwatching, star gazing at night - you may see the Northern Lights in winter, and lots of wildlife to look out for. Walks and cycles are sublime. Artists and writers will be inspired by the landscape.

Nicola, Sawday's Inspector

We absolutely loved this place . We fell in love with picture perfect cottage in the most stunning surroundings. The most beautiful turquoise sea view from the dinning room and kitchen. It was cosy on a stormy night . And light and bright in the day time . Beautiful furniture. Fabulous art works . We didn’t want to leave :

Di, Scarborough

This is the most delightful cosy cottage in walking distance from the spectacular Luskentyre Beach. I loved it so much that I wished it was mine!

Jane, Aberdeenshire

As a family we have stayed at Seaside house in Luskentyre 5 times and keep coming back as it is a little bit of heaven and a home from home. All the family look forward to unwinding from our busy lives and switching off the gadgets. Long walks on Sandy beaches, swimming, eagle and otter spotting catching up with friends and watching the ever changing landscape. We find new things to do each time we visit and love coming back to the Croft which is well equipped, cosy and comfortable. We come back each year as we we have not found another holiday home that is as perfect as seaside house.

Location

The neighbourhood

Hop over a stile and you can climb Beinn Dhubh, which is quite a puff but views from the top all the way to Skye (on clear days) are worth it. Tarbert is 10 miles away for two grocers - one has a butchery and is an off license as well. Here is the Isle of Harris distillery, not just for whisky but gin, or visit the Harris tweed shop. Take a boat trip to St Kilda for more birdwatching.

Local points of interest from Jo Blythe

  • Set back from the road in the much sought after hamlet of Luskentyre - close to Luskentyre beach which is often voted in the Top 10 beaches in the world. The cottage also sits at the foot of Beinn Dhubh with its amazing views even out to St Kilda.
  • A Walkers & Cyclists paradise - the Hebridean Way passes a couple of miles away and there are many beautiful walks on the whole island from short loops to impressive mountain adventures. Boat trips available out to St Kilda and some of the closer islands.
  • The Isle of Harris is a haven for wildlife. Frequently spotted in Luskentyre are Golden Eagles, Sea Eagles and resident otters down on the shore. Fishing available in nearby lochs and estuary by arrangement with local estate.
  • Luskentyre is a very safe beach for swimming and nearby there are great beaches for surfing/boogie boarding and if you're a keen kite surfer/windsurfer/kayaker Luskentyre beach and estuary has it all.
  • Many historic places to visit including St Clements Church in Rodel at the bottom of Harris and The Calanish Stones, Brock, Black House village and much more in Lewis (Harris & Lewis are one land mass divided by a mountain range.
  • Delicious freshly caught seafood available straight from the fishermen and some top notch restaurants serving locally sourced food from Venison to Hand Dived Scallops. Yummy fare from food vans in key locations and some lovely cafés and galleries too.

Introducing

Jo Blythe

Jo (a volunteer for a children's hospice) and Mark (publisher and keen fell runner) live in Oxford. They've had this croft as their family holiday home for many years and they and their three children come up as often as they can. They love the wildlife, boat trips, sailing, walking on the beach and the beautiful views.
