The Experience

Golden eagles soar above this contemporary, larch-clad house, while Highland cattle graze on croft land. This is a place for families and friends to retreat and find peace spotting otters and deer by day, and stargazing through the telescope by night. You’re left a starter pack of logs to get the wood-burner blazing, as well as wine and smoked salmon for a welcome apéritif.

Downstairs, sink into deep sofas and browse well-stocked bookcases; the open-plan kitchen and dining room beyond is bright and sociable. Step through French windows to a terrace with outdoor furniture and a barbecue. A pair of twin rooms and a double, all simply furnished with crisp white bed linen, can be found on the same floor. There’s another king-sized double room up the wooden staircase. Tiled bathrooms are stylish and a couple have luxurious walk-in showers.

It’s an eight-minute walk to a beach for paddle boarding or swimming and a three-mile drive to more.

Reviews

If you adore wild, rugged landscapes, wide open spaces with sea eagles soaring above you, long white beaches all to yourselves, cycling along quiet roads, getting your supplies in then hunkering down in much comfort you will be very very happy here. Clubbers and night-life seekers should avoid.

We had a truly wonderful week staying in this exceptional house. Beautifully & thoughtfully designed, it lacks for nothing. 4 bedrooms 3 bathrooms, loved the crisp white linens & tartan blankets. Tastefully decorated, everything very useable, many cooking essentials, CDs & games to play. Clearly well loved by the family who own it. There’s a telescope, table tennis, boogie boards & a delightful mini mission house. Try a Harris Gin by the wood burning stove watching the sunset after exploring. A stunning coastline with gorgeous views, every turn offers another beautiful bay. Hebridean Heaven.

We have just come back from this wonderful holiday home feeling refreshed, peaceful and with clear minds. Some of our family are from the Island so this was a nostalgic visit to see the land, wildlife and also amazing scenery. The house is beautiful with panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding land. We saw stags, eagles, ships on the water and lots and lots of sheep! The house has been designed extremely well and you will want for nothing. It is full of comfort and is so welcoming. There is an exceptional beach a ten minute walk up the road which has golden sands, and perfect for a swim.

We chose this house for the location and were not disappointed by the views or the wildlife. The house is cosy, filled with the owner's possessions (books, cd's, food, clothes and an enviable whisky collection!), so we felt like pampered house guests! There are no curtains or blinds in the bedrooms or bathrooms (no obscured glass) so bring a sleep mask & beware of inquisitive cyclists on Sunday mornings!

My wife and I had a fantastic stay on the Isle of Lewis, we had a week staying in this wonderful house. The house had all the facilities you would need, it has enough room for 2 families of 4 but does not feel too big if there is only a couple in the house. The location is stunning and so peaceful, we had a herd of highland cattle grazing near by, had red deer virtually come to garden. then to cap it all we had a golden eagle fly past the front window and had 2 sea eagles flying in mountains at the back of the house. the location is so peaceful and remote. It is a distance but worth it

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a remote spot – Stornoway, where the ferry comes and goes, is just under 40 miles but on the way you pass Uig Community Shop (eight miles) which has everything you could want. There's a community centre too which sometimes has activities and a nice café serving soup, toasties etc. You'll also find the Uig Sands restaurant with a tasting menu for a special occasion and their own smokery.

Local points of interest from Jackie MacKay

  • Only 20 minutes walk to beautiful white sandy beaches and cliff walks . Roll out of bed and climb Mealashal, the highest mountain on Lewis, to enjoy spectacular views out to St Kilda and down to Uist.
  • Enjoy fresh scallops from the Scallop Shack (Miavig), stock up at the resourceful Uig Stores or dine in at the wonderful Uig Sands restaurant 20 minutes drive away and enjoy a menu of delicious local produce and seafood as you watch the sunset over Uig Bay.
  • For the energetic this is cycling heaven! Miles of empty single track roads, with enticing refreshments at Loch Croistean Coffee Shop or Uig Community Centre tearoom (summer only) providing a suitable reward for your efforts.
  • Visit the Callanish Standing Stones, the most complete historical stone circle in Europe . Superb coffee shop and information centre and unlike Stonehenge wander freely amongst these magnificent stones.
  • After a day out in the hills, select a book from the bookcase, curl up on inviting sofas and relax in the warmth of the woodburning stove.
