The Experience

Although this house was built in 1870 the interiors are very much 21st-century, with airy open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas to spread out in. There’s a mezzanine library with hundreds of books and Netflix to escape to and a piano in the entrance hall too.

Gethin and Carolynn live across the road and leave a welcome pack of seasonal local food. They can arrange a chef to cook for you if you want a special dinner, or tours of the Borders, a Land Rover safari, alpaca trekking and archery.

It’s a two-minute walk to shops and restaurants but as the garden overlooks Ettrick valley it feels quite rural. There’s plenty to do – cycling and hill walking through spectacular Southern Uplands scenery, fishing, golf. Hadrian’s Wall is within striking distance to the south; Edinburgh is an hour away to the north.

Reviews

We had a lovely time, the house is very well equipped and so quiet. Lovely walks around Selkirk, we also enjoyed exploring the local museum and shops.

Fabulous house, we will miss it and the apples in the orchard! Thank you for a great holiday in Selkirk.

The Melsoms, Brisbane

What a lovely stay in a wonderful house. We relaxed and chatted and drank. Perfect!

Four friends from Glasgow and The Dales, Glasgow

We had an amazing couple of weeks. The house is such a fantastic location to explore all that the borders have to offer.

The Knight family, Cheltenham

Terrific property + location for exploring the Scottish Borders, great for access to Edinburgh, stunning countryside + riverside walks as well as coastal towns. Highly recommend red squirrel watching with Go Wild Scotland

Stephen and Amanda, Rochester

Amazing family stay for the Common Riding. Kids loved exploring in the house.

The Johnstons, McGhees and Brownlees, Selkirk

Gorgeous property with everything you could need for the stay. Great views and perfect location.

Great, stunning, amazing. This place is truly special. We love Selkirk, especially the cafe and butcher. Very historic surroundings and an amazingly comfortable bed.

The Howards, Epping Forest

We've really enjoyed our week exploring the Borders for the first time. Loved the accommodation, loads of space for everyone, even made use of the piano! Enjoyed walks & recommend Electric Ettrick E-bike hire. Nice visits to Melrose & Jedburgh. Thank you!!

Lovely home, quaint town and amazing views! We truly enjoyed our time at Five Turrets and exploring the Scottish Borders. Gethin was a fantastic host who was helpful, kind - much appreciated!

The Radi Family, Chicago

Such a lovely stay! Slept so well and loved spending time in the garden. The Ship Inn in Melrose was great for a pint, as was the abbey, gardens and lovely by the Tweed River. Spent a couple in Edinburgh - Park + Ride easy and convenient. Visited the French restaurant in Selkirk and used Tony's for a takeaway. Lovely holiday!

The Hopkins and Caliers, Daventry and Telford

A place which has the "wow" factor with stunning views across the town. Conveniently placed for the town centre and a great base for many trips down memory lane in the area I grew up in. Thank you and God bless!

The Alder 6, Aberdeen

We were in awe of this beautiful home from the moment we walked in. It is such a fabulous family space with a comfortable yet stylish interior. We immediately felt at home after a very warm welcome. We loved exploring the local area and enjoyed the Go Wild Scotland walk, which was a very gentle and pleasant stroll. Thank you!

The Holdens, Manchester

Stunning house, lovely stay. The building itself is stunning and the views from the huge windows are just beautiful. The bedrooms and living spaces look lovely and are very comfortable. The owner was so accommodating and welcoming too. Such a treat to stay here while visiting the borders!

Graeme, Glasgow

Just Wow! I think that covers The Five Turrets perfectly! We had a fantastic stay this week and the weather was perfect too. It was our first visit to the Scottish Borders and we will definitely be back. The Five Turrets has everything you could possibly require and all top quality; all of the online photos were exactly what you get. We felt at home straightway and it was the ideal place to relax. We are a family of five with two adults and three children aged 9, 13 and 18 and it was perfect for us all... The River walk was lovely...the four mile Cardrona forest trail ..was beautiful.

Claire, Tenterden

The Five Turrets is pure joy...The photographs do not really do this place justice. The space is much grander than it appears online. The tower in the top bedroom is a fabulous fairytale quirk....The location is a two minute walk from Selkirk's charming town centre but only five minutes from a beautiful park, loch and stately home. There is spectacular scenery and wildlife on the doorstep yet it is close to civilisation with superfast broadband...This is a stunningly renovated heritage property that has had an injection of modern luxury. We did not want to leave our fairytale Borders' bolthole

Gerri, London

A long weekend in Selkirk was made magical by a stay at The Five Turrets. The other reviews capture the building perfectly, but to repeat, the rooms are well apportioned with fantastic furniture and plenty of plates, cups, glasses and utensils to complete the stay. We arrange for a chef to come to the house and cook for us. A perfect meal which started off the weekend in the best way. We also arranged a visit to a local gin distillery. Both recommended by the owners. Thoroughly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

Five Turrets is on the edge of Selkirk, where Sir Walter Scott served as sheriff for 33 years – you can visit his former courtroom, now a museum, as well as the oldest building in the town, Halliwell’s House Museum. There are plenty of walks ranging from gentle to strenuous – ask your hosts for more information.

Local points of interest from Gethin Chamberlain

  • This is the home of the notorious Border Reivers, bloodthirsty brigands who terrorised the border lands for centuries. The dramatic fortified pele towers built to keep them at bay dot the landscape and many are open to visitors. Very Instagrammable too.
  • It's a great place to see ospreys and golden eagles. We work with local experts to offer wildlife safaris and we know where to find those elusive red squirrels too. Or head over to the coast and you can dive with seals or take a boat trip to see dolphins.
  • Prefer your wildlife on a plate? There's salmon, trout and grayling fishing nearby on the world famous River Tweed and the Ettrick Water. We work with a hugely experienced fisherman to provide access to the best beats. There's loch fishing too.
  • We've got some of the best hillwalking in Scotland and provide detailed routes from the doorstep. Try The Three Brethren for fabulous views. For cyclists, there's world-class mountain biking on the 7 Stanes trails at Peebles, Innerleithen and Newcastleton.
  • The local food and drink is superb. Visit the new Borders Distillery visitor centre in Hawick or enjoy a gin tasting session in the house with Selkirk Distillers. For a real treat, book a personal chef to prepare a special tasting menu in your own kitchen.
  • You'll find many more suggestions for things to do on our own website, all pinned to a detailed Google map to help you plan your visit. Let us know if you want advice or a tailored itinerary - we'll do our very best to help. www.fiveturrets.com/explore

Introducing

Gethin Chamberlain

Gethin and Carolynn spent six years in India before settling in Selkirk with their son Ieuan. They bought the property and renovated it to run as a family business to support Gethin's work as a human rights photojournalist and Carolynn's endeavours to turn her passion for weaving into a business. You'll find examples of Carolynn's beautiful work throughout the property, while some of Gethin's pictures decorate the walls. They want their guests to get the most out of their stay so are working with local businesses to provide the widest range of experiences possible.
