The Experience

Fields of sheep and a rushing river surround this peaceful converted mill. You have your own wing with sitting room, separate entrance and garden so you’ll feel nicely private.

Your hosts’ passion for living off the land is inspiring – meet their rare breeds of sheep, pigs and hens whose meat and eggs will end up on your plate, along with fruit and veg from the kitchen garden. Peacocks wander and the dogs, Golden Guernsey goats and geese are all part of life on this working smallholding – and you can sign up for craft and farm courses or a rejuvenating ‘solo retreat’.

You’re very well looked after: tea and cake in the conservatory, tasty breakfasts, a lunch platter if you don’t want to go out, or a packed lunch for day trips, and seasonal dinner with a bit of notice. It’s a two-mile wander to the pub.

Reviews

An absolutely beautiful and peaceful place to unwind and relax. Colin & Deborah, the hosts, really have created a very special place, with nature, wildlife and their animals at the heart of everything they do and they take delight in sharing their knowledge and their passion. This really is a place to take some time out, grab a book from their fabulous eclectic library, from pig breeding, goat husbandry to rewilding & fiction, there is a book for everyone and best of all, you can read whilst enjoying a wonderful roaring log fire and sinking into big squishy sofas. A very special place.

Jamie, Brighton

The Lint Mill is a small farm with sheep, goats, chickens, pigs and other animals, all looked after by Deborah and Colin with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. They are delightful hosts – Colin helped our seven-year-old granddaughter get to know the baby goats, much to her absolute delight. He also cooks dinner and breakfast, all from locally-sourced produce – all delicious. The bed and breakfast accommodation is self-contained and is very comfortable and well supplied with everything you need. Highly recommended.

David and Robin, Sydney

An amazing space, an amazing experience, hosted by amazing people Debbie and Colin. After a 2 night stay (not long enough) we headed home with great positivity and much refreshed. If only such a source of wellbeing was available on prescription I would take it gladly. Everything about The Lint Mill oozes quality and comfort at the same time. Thank You Both for sharing.

Judith, Angus

How do they do it time and time again? If your criteria includes a warm and delightful welcome, lovely and comfortable accommodation and good food then look no further. We have visited three or four times before and we look forward to returning in the future. You can also have a relaxing peace and quiet or share it with hens, geese and goats. Deborah and Colin are outstanding.

Peter and Marianne, Harrogate

The Lint Mill is a beautiful place to stay at multiple levels. Most simply, the secluded location, standard of accommodation & the food (the vast majority grown on the smallholding, we'd recommend booking dinner) makes it feel like a luxury escape. More deeply, spend time talking with Deborah & Colin about their ethos in caring for their land & animals and you find yourself being inspired and 'earthed'. In a post pandemic world everything felt very Covid secure with plenty of sanitizer. This was our third time staying as a family and our children are already asking when we can return.

Mark and Alice, Sheffield

The Lint Mill was recommended to us by German friends when we were living in India. Eight years after their visit, it was still a highlight of their trip to Scotland. So our expectations were high, and yet this stay exceeded them. Colin and Deborah are so welcoming, and willing to share their extraordinary project with guests. The walks from the property are lovely, and the food both at breakfast and in the evenings mouth watering. Piglet bedding, and scones for tea. A unique property with a unique welcome. We are planning a return stay in the Autumn.

Carole & Ian, Edinburgh

This is our third visit, but the first under pandemic restrictions and we felt every effort had been gone to for maximum COVID awareness and safety without compromising on the relaxing welcome you always get. The Lint Mill really is a wonderful place, and Deborah and Colin fantastic hosts. We will be back.

The information in your 23rd Edition of the British Bed and Breakfast guide is absolutely correct in all respects. While Deborah was not present during our visit, Colin made a terrific host and also fed us a fine dinner from his home produced meat and vegetables. What a chef!! His sourdough bread is unbeatable. We were very lucky to secure a night there and enjoy our entire wing of their charming house.

Fleet & Jeremy, Somerset

What a delight, Deborah & Colin have worked very hard to make this a truly idyllic location for their organic smallholding, and the same passion and attention to detail has been reflected in the guest accommodation, nothing has been overlooked and beautifully complemented with local artists’ work and Deborah’s stained window. We took advantage of the local cheese platter offer for a light evening meal with some of Colin's wonderful sourdough bread, this is bread as it should be. This is a rare find and we will definitely be back.

Jamie, Brighton

Fabulous accommodation, peaceful and perfect. Food cooked by Colin delicious. Deborah and Colin made me very welcome. I would recommend The Lint Mill to anyone who wants a tranquil beautiful place to stay.

Sally, Leighton Buzzard

The Lint Mill is in a truly delightful rural setting off the beaten track. The accommodation is very comfortable, reflecting traditional tastes and the keen interests of Colin and Deborah in organic farming (they have certified organic status), as well as their artistic and other interests. Colin is a marvelous cook using mainly their own meat and vegetables....the lamb in a red currant sauce was superb eaten in the conservatory and the “full Scottish” breakfast was magnificent.

David and Amanda, Stamford

Arrived on a wet and windy night to a warm welcome from Colin, wood fire burning in a warm and cosy living room. Delightful. Had looked at Lint Mill several times and it did not disappoint, quite the opposite, everything was wonderful, atmosphere, food and whole ethos of the place. Colin served dinner to Morag and me in a candlelit conservatory, we felt a bit spoiled, definitely recommend staying for dinner. It was a birthday surprise for Morag and phew! she loved it, as did I. The two nights were a lovely relaxing end to a hectic fortnight away. Thanks Colin for your good company.

GORDON, FALKIRK

A truly wonderful place to break our journey to and from the Western Isles and well worth planning to spend two nights each way. Relaxing, elegant and spacious accommodation, good food and welcoming hosts.

Richard, Abingdon

The Lint Mill is an exceptional place to stay! Colin and Debbie offer a warm welcome to their ecologically minded small holding and provide not only all the comfort you could hope for, but also delicious home cooking using their own produce. I've restored my sanity here during a few days special retreat and we have also brought our grandson, who loved the interaction with the animals. The Lint Mill is per fctly located deep in the countryside, but only a short distance from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Jeannie, Renfrewshire

The Lint Mill is a wonderful place to stay. A real piece of paradise to find. You have a fabulous space to stay which was so comfortable. It was a real treat to have the log fire burning as it was snowing outside. All the attention to detail such as the natural soaps make it a real special place to stay. The food for both breakfast and dinner was superb. I can't recommend it highly enough! We had our 2 year old with us and Colin went out of his to make her a special meal and cook what she wanted for breakfast. Colin showed us all the animals which was a bonus. Great place

Vicki, Kilsyth

We had 3 relaxing nights at the Lint Mill. We were spoiled by the comfortable and tasteful accommodation reflecting Deborah's care and attention which had all the qualities of a top hotel. This was coupled by the excellent attention to detail in the meals prepared and served by our super host Colin. All freshly sourced from the gardens of the Lint Mill. Overall it was a chance to experience a special approach to sustainable living with genuine hospitality with made Patrick's 60th birthday visit to Lanarkshire one to remember.

Fiona, Manchester

We stayed at The Lint Mill on our way to north Scotland and repeated on the way back down. A wonderful place to stay - so inspiring and peaceful. Would certainly recommend. Very good food cooked by Colin - would love to return.

JENNY, HUNGERFORD BERKSHIRE

Wonderful, cosy winters night spent at the Lint Mill with my partner and our then 1 year old little boy! Stunning scenery, incredibly relaxed atmosphere and delicious home grown and home made food...idyllic!

Chiara, Glasgow

We really loved the Lint Mill. We have stayed at many Sawdays over the last 20 years in the UK, France and Italy and this really was the best. Colin and Debbie are delightful hosts the place is idyllic and Colin cooked us some lovely food for which he was totally responsible. Some really good wildlife too an otter, two herons, a dipper as well as all the usual garden birds. A real delight.

Rosalie

Just magic - amazing everything - all home bred and cooked organic food, hospitality, attention to detail, beautiful, clean and uncluttered yet warm and homely, Debbie & Collin are lovely, welcoming, interesting and down-to-earth folks who are happy to share their small-holding experiences. We also enjoyed the excellent selection of CDs, collection of books about eco-living and meeting ALL the many animals - everything has character, nothing soul-less or mass-produced here!! Highly recommended by Soozy & Stephen :)

Location

The neighbourhood

The Lint Mill is down a long drive, on the bank of the North Medwyn river, so you can stay as secluded as you like, exploring the gardens and admiring the animals and productive vegetable plots. To stretch your legs beyond the smallholding, choose a walk suggested by your hosts, through woods, farmland or along the river where with luck you might spy a kingfisher or an otter. Two miles away is a village with pubs, shop and post office.
