The Experience

Come to this tranquil spot on the Waternish peninsula for views, light and peace – on a clear day you can enjoy breathtaking, uninterrupted views across the Minch to the Outer Hebrides. The eco-friendly, architect-designed building overlooks a beautiful stretch of coast from Dunvegan Head to Loch Bay; wonderful walks start from your doorstep.

Glazed sliding doors frame the sea and sky beyond, there’s a comfy sofa and a wood-burner to keep you cosy on days when the weather is wild outside. Bring back your catch of the day and cook in the well-equipped little kitchen.

It’s a 20-minute stroll to a good pub – the Stein Inn – for local mussels and scallops on the shore – in summer nip back before it gets dark for spectacular sunsets from the terrace.

Reviews

This is the perfect home away from home on Skye. A peaceful and beautiful place with the most spectacular sea views. The property is modern, spotlessly clean and wonderfully cosy. Murray and Lorna’s care and attention to detail make this place truly special.

Catriona, Anderson Creek

This house is absolutely perfect. The views are magnificent watching the weather change from minute to minute from the cosy living room. Lorna and Murray are wonderful hosts. Going back again December 2022 counting down the days to a relaxing week.

Lorna, Berwick-Upon-Tweed

Outstanding holiday cottage! Stunning views. Lovely quiet location but good for getting to most parts of Skye. Everything about the cottage was perfect. We could look at that view all day every day, no matter what the weather. We had some unbelievable sunsets. A most enjoyable stay and we WILL be back.

Adrian, Birstwith

Absolutely stunning location and facilities. It’s a little piece of heaven on earth. Can’t recommend enough .. perfect and the welcome was lovely !

Helen, Stirling

Can't quite describe how beautifully quiet and cosy this place is. It's perfectly positioned for exploring the island and then there's that view. One evening we got back from another day of taking in Skye's unbelievable scenery then just sat with books, looking up every few pages to see how the light had changed on the bay. Can also totally recommend a pint at the stein Inn, just a twenty minute walk down the hill as well as an afternoon boat trip with Diver's Eye, also just down in Stein.

Chris, Bristol

Lorna really has created the perfect place to sit and stare at Skye. It was a joy to come back to after exploring the island.

If you are looking for somewhere to stay on The Isle of Skye, look no further than The Lookout near Stein. A warm and very knowledgable welcome awaits from Lorna and Murray. You have two extremely good “eateries” nearby, a boat trip option and it is a great location for exploring the Waternish and Trotternish Peninsulas, over to Neist Point and further down the west coast to McLeod’s Maidens and Loch Bracadale. But best of all is the view from The Lookout - so much to take in and every day it is different, drawing you in to keep observing. Enjoy, we did!!

Matthew & Alison, Newport

Amazing House, Fabulous View ! Didn't see another house as good to stay on the whole island as this one,the view is even more spectacular than the pictures. It was worth the wait to get a vacancy! Loved Lorna and her warm welcome. This is an exceptional place to stay !

Connor, Boston

Fabulous cottage with stunning views and sunsets. The Lookout is just perfect inside and outside. It is spotlessly clean, well equipped and very very cosy!! It is in a good central position for visiting the whole of the beautiful island. The owners are lovely people who will go out of their way to help and nothing is too much trouble. Had an incredible week staying here!!!

Vee, Wimborne Minster, Dorset

Fabulous, clean warm modern cottage with amazing view! The owners Lorna and Murray are really friendly.Everything inside and out is kept to a very high standard. We would highly recommend this as a place to explore the Isle of Skye

Douglas, York

We had a great week at the lookout. The location is stunning but it is the care and attention to detail invested in making this a true home from home that marks this out as perhaps the loveliest holiday cottage we have ever visited … Thank you both

Location

The neighbourhood

The Waternish peninsula is packed with places to explore and enjoy. From the Stein Inn you can take a boat trip round the corner of the island and the bay for seals and sometimes dolphins and sea eagles. You can walk to the Michelin Star Loch Bay Restaurant. The nearest village is Dunvegan (a 15-minute drive away), where you will find cafés and shops and Portree is half an hour.

Local points of interest from Lorna & Murray Gray

  • The Lookout is a short walk from the oldest inn on Skye, the Stein Inn, established 1790. Here you can sample fresh locally caught seafood, traditional pub meals and Scottish whiskies and few cottages along is the intimate Michelin Star LochBay Restaurant
  • The sunsets that can be enjoyed on the Waternish peninsula have been named as the best in the world, triumphing over competition from the likes of Hawaii or Bali.
  • The Lookout is an eco-friendly passive house and features an advanced design air recovery system meaning that it is a cosy retreat all year round.
  • Waternish has a rich and colourful history. Visit the medieval church and cemetery at Trumpan, now in ruin, to discover stories of clan feuding, brutal attacks, and try your luck at the ancient Trial Stone.
  • Take a short drive around the coastline to dine at The Three Chimneys. This world famous restaurant has received a host of international awards and acclaim, including Michelin and AA status.
  • Stroll down to the local pier at Stein to and take to the sea with Diver's Eye Boat Trips. The knowledgeable local skipper offers a variety of boat trips from wildlife watching, fishing and days away.

Introducing

Lorna & Murray Gray

Lorna and Murray moved to Skye from Perthshire in 2014, after many years of holidaying here. They had always dreamed of making the island their home, so after much searching, when they found the best location to build a house with the perfect view on Waternish they knew it was meant to be. They’ll be on hand if you need anything during your stay.
