The Experience

Built in the 1800s, one half of the building has a turf roof (with bluebells in spring, wild grasses, sometimes orchids) and there are different levels so it feels much bigger than it is. There is the Croft House next door but you’re facing another way so you’ll be private. Downstairs find a bright, spacious living room with a big sofa at one end and a dining room and well-thought-out kitchen at the other – everything a serious cook could need is here.

Along the corridor and up the stairs your dreamy bedroom awaits – more like a suite with a huge picture window for taking in the views, a plump mattress with feather duvet and pillows, a soft Scottish wool throw and cosy bath robes. Binoculars sit by the window so you can look out for wildlife or scan the brilliant night skies.

Stock up, hunker down and enjoy the outdoors from your delicious pad or get out there for wild swimming, boat trips, fabulous walks and magnificent scenery.

Reviews

Spot minke whales, dolphins, seals and sea eagles from this hugely romantic hideaway – binoculars provided and easy chairs by the big picture window in the bedroom. It's a spoiling place too so when you're not outdoors walking, swimming, and enjoying nature, you'll be very happy to be indoors.

Location

The neighbourhood

Step out for walks or cycles, some listed with Walk Highlands website. You can walk 45 minutes along the quiet road for a sandy beach. Michelin-starred Loch Bay (you need to book really early) and the Stein Inn are a short drive and from here you can join boat trips. Dunvegan is a 25-minute drive for a small store, fruit and veg, a deli and cake shop. Explore the wonderful Trotternish peninsula.

Local points of interest from James Mitchell

  • Skye's only Michelin-starred restaurant, Loch Bay, and the island's oldest pub, The Stein Inn, are only a 10 minute drive away!
  • Mint Croft is located in the remote crofting village of Geary and many of our neighbours sell wonderful homemade goodies from small "honesty boxes" along the road, including freshly laid hen or duck eggs, award-winning Scottish tablet and home-baked cakes.
  • Using the binoculars available in the cottage, you can often spot dolphin, minke while, sea eagles and even, on occasion, killer whales in Loch Snizort.
  • The local area is famous for its Bortle grade-2 night sky, where the Aurora Borealis, the Milky Way, and noctilucent clouds frequently put on a stunning display.
  • Take a day trip to explore the rest of Skye, from the bloody clan stories richly told at nearby Dunvegan Castle to the Jurassic coastline of Trotternish which is peppered with dramatic scenery such as the Old Man of Storr, the Quirang and the Fairy Glen.
  • From the doorstop, many walks of all lengths and levels of difficulty can be found. Take a gentle stroll down to the beach at Gillen or head out on an adventurous hike around Waternish Point. Come home at warm up again around the fire pit.
