The Experience
On an isthmus hugged by freshwater lochs is one of Scotland’s finest gardens with the dreamy ruins of Castle Kennedy at one end and Lochinch Castle, the family home of the Stairs (they’ve been here for generations) at the other. With 75 acres to roam, all ages will be happy here; walks ramble off in all directions. Explore land sculptures built in the 1730s; spot geese, herons, maybe an osprey, red squirrels and otters too. There are mesmerising displays of rhododendrons, azaleas and embothrium, and the ancient Monkey Puzzle Avenue is a treat. Find three charming properties. Chauffeur’s, on the top floor of a two-storey Victorian carriage house, has pretty French chateau style turrets, an open fire, long views, a large kitchen and three beautifully restful bedrooms. Balker Lodge, originally a gate house, is a cleverly revived bolthole for two. Ice House is a single-storey cottage with two pretty bedrooms, a log-burner in the sitting room and a pristine kitchen. All have their own private outside space, splendid welcome baskets with delicious cakes, and you get the run of the gardens. Why not take a guided tour with head gardener, John, who’s worked here for 25 years!

I had the most wonderfully relaxing and peaceful time at the ice house cottage, walking my dogs, baking scones and soda bread, exploring bays and beaches and drawing and watercolouring in front of lovely log fires. Every comfort was thought of and It was a truly comfortable and happy stay. Many thanks to all.

We have now stayed in both Ice House Cottage and Balker Lodge and found them both beautifully presented, in stunning locations and with the added bonus of acres of estate grounds to meander through and wildlife to spot. Would definitely recommend!

Just spent a lovely relaxing week at the new property on the Stair Estate, Icehouse Cottage, which has been done to a very high standard. Comfortable beds, well appointed and a cosy log burner which came in handy during a downpour! Garden also lovely and great views. Access to numerous walks around the estate which we, and our cocker spaniel pup thoroughly enjoyed was the icing on the cake. Thoroughly recommended for anyone wanting a relaxing break in a lovely setting.

What a wonderful place to stay. We had a lovely week staying at The Chauffeur’s Apartment. The apartment itself is lovely and has everything needed for a really comfortable stay. The grounds of the estate are stunning, we spent many a happy hour walking our dogs here. Would highly recommend.
