The Experience

Applegarth House was previously the manse for the church next door. Built with Dumfriesshire red sandstone, dating from 1720, it’s been refurbished from top to toe by Andrew and Kirsteen and is now a classic country house with elegance and comfort. Bedrooms have polished antiques, restful colours, candles and flowers, and all you hear is sheep, cows and birdsong – and the Sunday morning bells.

Kirsteen loves to cook, so you’ll have home-baked treats at teatime and homemade marmalade and garden produce with a full Scottish in the morning. Have a wander along the river and through surrounding fields afterwards.

There are three friendly dogs padding about, and you’re welcome to bring yours along – but they can’t sleep in the bedrooms. Walk by or fish the salmon river Annan, explore Eskrigg Nature Reserve, visit Annandale Distillery and take home a “smoulderingly smoky” malt or two. Return to a fire in the drawing room – your hosts have some fascinating old family stories.

Reviews

Our single night stay at Applegarth house was perfect in every way. We received a warm welcome on arrival, our dog was immediately shown where she could investigate the enclosed walled garden. Our rooms were all graced with charming fresh flower arrangements. Before supper, we were invited to join Kirsteen and Andrew for a pre-dinner drink and then they served a delicious home-cooked evening meal. Our beds were luxuriously comfortable and breakfast choices were most generous. A perfect stay.

A wonderful B and B discovery! We stayed en route to and from Aberdeen. The welcome so warm and friendly, superb hospitality with evening meal and enjoyable conversation with our hosts Andrew and Kirsteen. We stayed extra night to explore the area and this b and b should persuade one to explore the region of historic houses, attractive coastline and scenery. We can’t rate this highly enough!

Michael, Knutsford

Kirsteen and Andrew have the most magical place. A beautiful old rectory in a lovely peaceful setting The attention to details and facilities in our room was worthy of any 5 star hotel. A delightful place serving wonderful food with charming and very entertaining hosts minutes from the M75.

Philip, York

An oasis of calm just minutes from the M75. Andrew and Kirsteen have created a most comfortable home from home. A beautiful old rectory, the room was better than many 5 star rooms with every detail carefully thought out and equipped. As we were the only guests they joined us for our beautifully prepared dinner. A lovely fun filled stay! Not many better launching points to explore bonnie Scotland.

Philip, York

We had booked Applegarth as a halfway stop between home and Skye - it was fabulous. Kirsteen and Andrew are superb hosts. Our room was very comfortable indeed. Tea and homemade cakes on arrival, pre dinner drinks and supper were delicious and we didn’t have to look after ourselves! We were joined by friends so made up a party of 5. Kirsteen and Andrew joined us for dinner and stories abounded particularly the Bell story! Our Spaniels were welcomed by the house Labradors and our walks around the house were ideal. Breakfast was a triumph and we left having decided we would come and stay again.

Jane, Broughton, Stockbridge

Following the directions carefully we came to this former Rectory next to a peaceful churchyard in open country. The house is beautiful, the accommodation superb, and the hospitality terrific. A great start to our holiday and warmly recommended to all.

James, Bideford

Brilliant overnight stay driving back home to Edinburgh from England. Welcoming hosts made me feel completely at home with tea in the sunny garden on arrival. Drinks on the decking overlooking the surrounding fields and hills as the sun went down was followed by a delicious dinner en famille. The leisurely route planned after the best Scottish breakfast took me through the Forest of Ae... glorious scenery. This will definitely become a regular stopover or even a relaxing break from the capital!

Richard, Edinburgh

Fantastic overnight stay on our way to Aberdeen. If you want high quality in both amenities and hosting then Applegarth House is the place for you.

Maurice, Salisbury

Marvellous marvellous marvellous! Another glorious overnighter with Kirsteen and Andrew at Applegarth House. Luxurious accommodation, wonderful food, fabulous company (and the perfect location if you're driving the M74 and want a jolly nice break). We shall be back again!

Alison, Strathcarron

Kirsteen and Andrew are charming and attentive hosts who made us very welcome in their lovely and comfortable house. Dinner and breakfast were delicious which set us up at the start of a great holiday in the Highlands and Outer Hebrides.

Mark, Woodbridge

Lovely house, very close to where I needed to be, with a lovely and very hospitable couple. Thank you so much.

Alexander, Guildford

Always excellent service. Went above and beyond for us. And such kind hearted hosts

Gillie, Lancs

We stayed in the 2 double bedrooms in the house for 5 nights in a glorious Autumn setting. The rooms were very comfortable and had all the accessories that we could possibly require. Our hosts Andrew and Kirsteen looked us incredibly well........entirely consistent with previous reports. We thoroughly enjoyed our pre-dinner drinks and 3 course dinner with them on 3 of the evenings that chose to remain at base. We found Applegarth House to be an excellent central and convenient base for exploring Dumfries & Galloway.

David, Bakewell

Kirsteen and Andrew are wonderful hosts - nothing is too much trouble and dinners are very entertaining. Applegarth House is a delightful base from which to explore Dumfries and Galloway. One of the best Sawdays stays we have had.

Michael, Bath

We had 4 wonderful nights staying at Applegarth House just out of Lockerbie. Kirsteen is an outstanding host, and along with her husband, Andrew, made our stay most enjoyable and memorable. The house is stunning and immaculately maintained, our bedroom suite was large, with beautiful decor and well-equipped. The bathroom was similarly impressive. Breakfast — which was absolutely delicious — was served in a large dining /sitting room area, filled with light and charming furniture. Kirsteen has excellent advice about day trips in the area. We heartily endorse a stay at Applegarth House.

Lynne, Australia

Kirsteen and Andrew take hospitality to a whole new level! We had the most marvellous, and all too brief, stay on 22 September 23. They made us feel like honoured guests in their lovely home. They offered dinner as well as bed and breakfast and that led to a delightful evening - it felt like a country house party! - in the company of Kirsteen and Andrew and other guests. We cannot speak too highly of Applegarth and we will be back!

Mike (and Karen), Oxford

Applegarth House is so warm and welcoming with charming hosts who couldn’t do enough to ensure we were comfortable throughout our stay. Annan is a beautiful well-furnished large and homely room with luxurious plush linen on very comfortable beds. The bathroom is spacious and warm with a shower over the bath, fluffy towels and lush toiletries. Hot drinks are available in the room with a thoughtful cafeteria, quintessential teapot, cup and saucer, a variety of teas and a flask of cold fresh milk on request. The food is delicious and served in a relaxed environment.

Jocelyn, Ivybridge

This is a lovely place. Andrew and Kirsteen looked after us brilliantly and made us feel very much at home.

Brian, Olney, Buckinghamshire

I wanted to thank you both so very much for such a lovely stay with you at the end of August. You have such a beautiful home and could not have been more kind and welcoming to me. The room I stayed in was so wonderfully comfortable, I wished I could have stayed for longer. Supper and breakfast were completely delicious -- and a drink on your lovely terrace was just such a lovely way to start the evening. Thank you again so very much. I could not have asked for a lovelier stay. It was everything I wanted and needed and much more.

Charlotte, Dorset

Driving up to Applegarth House, we knew that we were stepping into luxury and charm. Our hosts were so welcoming and all that anyone could wish. Our accommodations were so nicely appointed and designed to create a relaxing and pampered experience. The en-suite was luxurious and the bedroom was a sanctuary! We walked along the river and to the nearby Church. The provided breakfast was as beautiful to look at as it was to eat. We opted for dinners and oh my goodness! The table settings were so pretty we knew the meal was going to be amazing. We will most definitely stay here again!

Location

The neighbourhood

A rural, peaceful spot with birdwatching and fishing on the doorstep. 12th-century motte nearby; four miles from Lochmaben and three from Lockerbie, which has an interesting mix of shops, restaurants, pubs and monthly farmers' market. Moffat is 15 miles; Annan 14, with distilleries, festivals, museum and 53-mile Annandale Way running through, starting at the source of the river Annan.

Local points of interest from Kirsteen & Andrew Michell

  • We have an archaeological monument in our garden, an 11th century ancient Motte which is the remains of the Jardine Clan stronghold. Applegarth is the original seat of the Jardines and generations of the family lie in the small church graveyard next door.
  • The River Annan, one of the best salmon and sea trout rivers in the UK flows below our house. Day fishing permits can be bought. Enjoy lovely countryside and peace and tranquility.
  • See the the magnificent Telemachus submarine bell from World War ll . Telemachus was commanded by Kirsteen's father. Hear its incredible story of being stolen from the family home and how it was finally recovered. This was recounted on BBC Radio 4.
  • The beautiful Annandale Way, a 55 mile walking route between Moffat and Annan, winds past . Enjoy a wide variety of birds - moorland, woodland, field, river and coast and flowers and fauna. Trace Scottish history of this once hard fought over border
  • Devils Porridge Museum is a 5 star Scottish Visitor Attraction. It offers a brilliant interactive experience commemorating HM Factory Gretna, the largest munitions factory in the world during WW1. Full of stories, artefacts and old film. Worth a visit!
  • Take a bespoke tour at Dalton Gin Distillery. Visit the lab and relax at the gin-centric bar. A surprisingly Spanish theme encapsulates this little corner of Scotland with an array of Tapas on offer to accompany the tutored tasting. Truly fascinating!

Introducing

Kirsteen & Andrew Michell

Kirsteen and Andrew have created a luxurious B&B with a homely atmosphere. They like the flow of new people and happily share their home. Andrew is semi-retired, Kirsteen was previously in hospitality; she’s keen on cooking, including making marmalade and elderflower cordial. They love their dogs, whippet Ozzie and Labradors Phoebe and Milly, and walking them in beautiful Dumfriesshire.
