The Experience

Walk straight in to a hallway with wooden floors, lots of wellies waiting for you and hooks for coats – this is grand walking country. Then into the library which has a gorgeous mix of fiction, non-fiction, local interest, nature books and children’s books – pick something interesting and settle here or take it to the sitting room where you’ll find comfy armchairs, sofa and wood-burning stove.

The open-plan kitchen is well equipped and has basics for cooking in the cupboards along with locally-roasted coffee. You eat at a round table facing the views. On warm days you can open the doors to the terrace and garden where birds are trilling away and you may spot a red squirrel.

Bedrooms are up separate staircases: bright and pretty with well-dressed beds; the bathroom has botanical soaps and views over the garden. There’s an extra loo and utility room downstairs. Walks start from the door.

Visit the Botanic Garden at Benmore.

Local points of interest from Rebecca Wexler

  • You are 10 minutes drive from the peaceful swimming beach with stunning views at Ostel Bay. Parking available. The walk to the beach is enjoyable in itself. Sit under the trees at The Bothy cafe if you are lucky, a robin may take crumbs from your hand.
  • Open the door and walk! Left takes you past the boatyard ,round the coast. This is part of The Cowal Way. See the thundering waterfall, or turn up the hill to the road above the village where Tighnabruaich Ark stands cathedral like overlooking west kyle.
  • If you feel like pampering yourself, Portavadie Marina is only 5 miles away. It has an excellent restaurant too. Worth a special visit, is the ancient rainforest accessible here. It is full of mosses and lichens, gnarled trees and bird song.
  • There are plenty of places to eat and drink in and around Tighnabruaich; If tea and cake, or brunch is what you fancy, walk to Five West or The Tea Room in the village, or Wild Kitchen in Kames. For a delicious curry, go to Fyne Raja.
  • Tighnabruaich is very proud of the award winning Argyll coffee Roasters. Their coffee is sold locally and also enjoyed in the cafes. After sampling the coffee, visit Argyll Botany at Kilfinan forest and stock up on naturally scented soaps and lotions.
  • Looking out at the sailing boats passing by, may make you want to join them! Carry Farm runs an excellent sailing school for all ages in the summer months. When you hear the Waverely Paddle steamer approaching, go down to the pier and watch it dock.
