The Experience
You’re only 21 miles from Scotland in this harbour town with a lighthouse and you stay in a beautifully restored Georgian building. All the best architectural bits are retained but now there’s a swish Soho-house feel: muted colours, the softest blankets, espresso machines, a fridge for bubbly and a lovely fire in the breakfast room.
Arrive to a homemade treat. Karen is a gracious host and gives you breakfasts of homemade bircher muesli, avocado on sourdough or classic bacon and eggs. She’ll also help you plan your days. Venture out to good shops and much history – you may spot the local ‘chunky dunkers’ wild swimming group taking a swim opposite.
Join the coast path on foot or by bike, take a boat trip to the Copeland Islands for bird watching and jazz picnics in summer. There are great places to eat a stroll away – try The Harbour & Co, The Lighthouse Bar & Grill or Bull and Claw. You can also visit one of Ireland’s oldest pubs, Grace Neill’s, dating back to 1611.

Location
The neighbourhood
Wake to shore sounds in Donaghadee, a colourful seaside town just 30 minutes from Belfast. It’s stocked with independent shops (as well as seals, herons and otters). Birders can ferry out to Copeland Bird Observatory or use the binoculars to study Scotland’s coast. Visit the lighthouse, pier and Scrabo’s 19th-century tower or cycle the coastal path from Belfast to Donaghadee with lunch at the Dirty Duck. Wild swims and boat trips are popular.

Introducing
Karen Bolleboom
Welcoming Karen and her New Zealander partner John swapped their London careers for a life in Donaghadee. They’ve injected much style into this derelict seafront property, employing only local craftspeople. They live nearby and Karen brims with ideas for things to do locally and further afield. Originally from nearby Bangor, Karen has been away from Ireland for 23 years. The couple were thrilled to save this landmark building from becoming luxury flats and have refurbished it ready for a new generation of visitors to enjoy.
This slick operation is on the seafront of bustling, indie-shop filled Donaghadee. Walk or wild-swim from the doorstep. It's got muted and modern rooms with traditional touches, with echoes of the original chemist building if you know where to look. There's lots on locally from gin tastings to cycles and walks on the Mourne Coastal Route. This is the perfect place to pit-stop in style on the coast.
