The Experience

A listed Adam townhouse – elegance epitomised. Lofty rooms with polished floors and original features are dotted with quirky objets: bead-and-embroidery lampshades and chandeliers, bone china, a small mirrored Indian ceramic child’s dress – and your urbane host Richard’s accomplished paintings. His studio is at the bottom of the garden and you’re welcome to pop in – you might be tempted to buy too.

Bedrooms have charm and fine linen; the claw-foot roll top in the shared bathroom cuts a dash. The guest sitting room with a fire is a welcome haven after a busy day. Breakfast is unbeatable, perhaps kippers, smoked salmon, a continental spread, homemade preserves or a full English with home-laid eggs and tomatoes from the garden.

Then head out to wander around historic Whitby, explore the North Yorkshire Moors, go on a fishing trip, hunt for fossils… and kick your shoes off on the Blue Flag beach.

Reviews

We thought Union Place was a beautiful and special place to stay. Our room was elegant and peaceful and a good night’s rest was followed by a laivish breakfast. Its situation is so convenient for visiting all places on Whitby on foot and finding a different route back home each evening if you wish to admire the architecture of Whitby further. The house is comfortable and welcoming and filled with unique works of art, as well as various books relating to the history of Whitby. I expect we will be back to stay at Union Place, at a different time of year.

Janet, Cockermouth

A really wonderful place to stay made all the more special by the amazing hospitality from Richard and Jane, who really went out of our way to make us feel special. It was our first stop on our way up to Scotland and definitely one of the most memorable. Thanks so much for looking after us so well, despite our late arrival, despite arriving late and dietary requirements. We really loved staying with you - thanks for having us!

Rupert, Southampton

We have just returned from a delightful visit to Union Place. Richard is welcoming and knowledgeable, and the house charming and well located.

Will and Sarah, Newcastle upon Tyne

We very much enjoyed our stay at Union Place. This historic house is beautifully decorated. Bedrooms are very large and well furnished - the bed is very comfortable - and as guests, we have access to a dedicated living room with a beautiful view on the garden. Thank you Richard for your very warm welcome!

Brigitte, Lyon

We really enjoyed our stay at Union Place. Beautiful rooms and convenient location to from which to Whitby. Richard was an excellent host and great company at breakfast. Thank you so much for looking after us so well.

Sam, Tunbridge Wells

A fabulous b&b to discover the charms of Whitby. Union Place is a beautiful Georgian house which has been lovingly restored & the bedroom is very spacious with a lovely bay window & exceptionally comfy bed. Friendly, charming owners & tasty breakfast - what more could you ask for!

Charlotte, London

The Savoy it ain't, but that more famous Hostelry's clients couldn't do better on a visit to Whitby, something not to be put off for too long. The delights of Union Place, and its owners will put a smile on your face.

Mike, Chesterfield, Derbys

A really enjoyable stay and fantastic hosts. We will definitely be back again. Nothing more you could want. An amazing house, with a perfectly presented version of its historic self. You could explore it for a few days and find new things to enjoy. But you’ll be too busy enjoying a great conversation with your hosts and admiring all the beautiful artwork on display.

John, Nottingham

When in Whitby stay here. Quiet, relaxed, delightful hosts, art at every turn and even a Wassily chair by Marcel Breuer to lounge and take it all in. Garden, location and views just icing on the cake. Fully recommended and this from someone not easy to please.

James, Bath

The accommodation is gorgeous, the location was perfect (very very short distance to town and beach), perfectly located as a base and day trips to other surrounding areas - Richard was full of advice and recommendations on where to go and how to get the best experience when there - all in all, a perfect 3 night stay and we'd definitely come back if we make it up that way again (the duvet alone would be enough reason to return!) Thank you so much Richard!

Jasmin, London

Stylish, arty and cosy - with dogs, fab hosts and a wonderful breakfast. I was made to feel very much at home, which is so important if you're travelling on your own. Thank you :-)

Sian, London

A wonderful and incredibly stylish place to stay. The house is in a quiet neighbourhood yet is only a short 10 minute walk into the centre of town. I particularly enjoyed the vista from the window, the roll-top bath and excellent breakfast. Richard kindly served kippers at our request! I must say it is also incredibly good value for such luxury accommodation.

Catherine, Sheffield

A beautiful Georgian quirky house, with parking, in the very centre of Whitby, 3 minutes from the beach shops restaurants and every amenity. The bedrooms, bathroom and sitting room for guest use were exquisite and with every comfort and attention to detail. The welcome from our attentive and affable hosts and the breakfast provided, was superb and I can, without equivocation, wholeheartedly recommend it.

Carolyn, Harrogate

Sawdays is my 'go to' when planning a break, individual, quirky and full of character places to stay. Richard and Jane's Union place is exactly that. A beautiful home with charming hosts in a stunning part of the world. We stayed for 6 nights, enjoyed great breakfasts every morning, and looked forward to coming 'home' every evening. We were all made very welcome, and are very appreciative of their personal approach. It was fun! Thank you.

Gervais, Stroud

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful Georgian house: spacious accommodation with abundant original features, helpful and hospitable hosts plus a delicious breakfast. Great situation - very short walk to the town and coast - and Whitby itself was full of interest and surprise. Already planning a return stay.

Anna, London

It's difficult to know where to start after probably the most enjoyable 3 days of our lives at Union House in Whitby. This Adam Style Georgian town house has been thoughtfully renovated and impressively improved over 27 years with fittings of the highest standard which make any visit just so special. Tho owners Richard & Jane are two in a million and fantastic hosts, never intrusive but to miss their company would be a travesty. My wife and I never stopped laughing after spending some time with the pair. They are so so funny. Great house, great time in Whitby! Never forgotten break.

Peter & Linda, Denbigh

Three wonderful nights spent in the company of our thoughtful, funny and very helpful host and a charming dog. The breakfast music was as excellent as the food , the rooms even more impressive than the description and Whitby and its surroundings a smile-inducing discovery. To make use of a better poet than I: Don't think twice, it's alright!

Ulyana and Chanel, Altrincham

Union Place is a comfortable, elegant and easy-going place to relax after a day exploring Whitby and the moors. Richard serves locally sourced breakfasts, news and sightseeing advice. Splendid.

Martin, London

We had four lovely days in Whitby. The bedrooms are spacious as is the share bathroom. Richard cooks amazing breakfasts and we enjoyed seeing all his art both in the studio and the house. Union Place is very well situated and everything is in reasonably easy walking distance - even the Abbey from which the views are amazing and well worth the climb.

Joscelyn, London

This is very highly recommended. Union Place is a beautiful Georgian townhouse and staying here, with the use of an independent lounge as well as your lovely bedroom, is as much a part of the holiday as being in Whitby itself. Richard is a kind and accommodating host and cooks delicious breakfasts. We stayed for two nights and would certainly visit again if in the area. Jeff and Fran, Cardiff

Location

The neighbourhood

Union Place is a five-minute walk from both the town and beach, two minutes from the park, museum and art gallery. Whitby is a hugely popular historic town of real character, with a wealth of period properties, independent shops, a busy harbour and lots of good places to eat. The North Yorks Moors are a 10-minute drive, and the quaint coastal villages of Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay are nearby.

Local points of interest from Richard & Jane Pottas

  • Union Place is an Adam Style Georgian town house, built in 1790. The current owners have been at pains to preserve the integrity of the property, whilst acknowledging that we are now in the 21st century.
  • Very elegant, you are immediately aware of the houses past when entering the splendid hall with its ornate covings, and panelled doors, flanked by grandfather clocks, and plaster casts depicting figures from antiquity.
  • Union Place was built at the height of the towns prosperity for a local banker. ln 1790 the house stood in splendid isolation, facing north south. The south facing gardens are still in the original terraces as when first laid out
  • Only five minutes walk from the cliff top, and ten minutes from the centre of town and the harbour, Union Place is ideally situated, almost appearing aloof from the hustle and bustle of the town below. Both roadside and garage parking available.
  • Whitby is a town of immense historical significance, and enables visitors to experience all aspects of the coast and surrounding moors. Blessed with a range of fine dining options to suite all pockets and palettes, within walking distance of Union Place.
  • Union Place is now the proud owner of its own chickens, you can go and pick your own eggs for breakfast if you so wish !
