The Experience

A characterful building that stands on Market Place, where market traders set up shop on Mondays. The exterior is 16th century and flower baskets hang from its mellow stone walls. Inside find stripped floors, open fires, a cosy bar and friendly staff eager to help. The restaurant is at the back, the heart and soul of the inn, with delicious food flying from the kitchen courtesy of chef Darren – all local with game in season, moor venison and fresh seafood from Whitby.

Vintage bedrooms in the main house are traditional and those in the courtyard more contemporary, but all are very comfortable with immaculate beds and Bramley soaps and lotions. You’re on the edge of the North York Moors for stunning walks or exploring pretty villages like Thornton-le-Dale. Unwind in the bar with a pint of local ale or a glass of wine before dinner, wake to a hearty breakfast.

Nip to Feast for a deli and café, hop on a steam train, stride the glorious hills.

Settle into one of two wonderfully traditional bar rooms, all stone flags, burnished oak tables and open fires – the window seat is perfect for a spot of lunch with the papers – or slip through to the elegant dining room for a candle-lit dinner. Stay over in character rooms above the inn, or a contemporary room in the converted stables, then coast or moorland walks await after a hearty breakfast.

Really lovely boutique accommodation. Great mirror in the bedroom for getting ready ladies! Excellent food - a lovely dinner in the garden. Wished we could have stayed longer.

Our stay was a truly sumptuous affair, in one of the Hideaway Rooms in a converted stable block, chosen for dog-friendly reasons. These rooms feature individual design, luxury bedding, towels and furnishings, a fantastic shower and bath experience, and complimentary WiFi. They're extremely spacious and have slate floors with underfloor heating. Service is immaculate, and the food is imaginative and sourced mainly from local sources. We found not one thing to criticize, and had a wonderful and relaxing stay. Highly recommended! The place has an elegance and friendliness that is rare.

The neighbourhood

Pickering is perhaps one of the prettiest market towns in the National Park with a 13th-century castle and a station from which you can take a steam train to Levisham and explore the glorious Hole of Horcum on foot. Dalby Forest has waymarked walking and cycling trails, you can visit Castle Howard for its house and gardens, or Nunnington Hall. Treat yourselves to afternoon tea at Cedar Barn.

There are fantastic houses and gardens to visit - Castle Howard (as in Brideshead Revisited), Nunnington Hall on the banks of the river Rye, the Walled Garden at Scampston, guaranteed to delight.
