The Experience
This is a generous place, where you’ll arrive to a superb breakfast hamper including homemade jams from Philip and Caroline’s garden fruit, and you can even order a home cooked supper. If you are bringing children there will be games, books and lots of space to play, inside and out. Even your dog gets a super welcome with throws, treats, towels and info on dog-friendly places to eat.
Doze on the pretty sun terrace under a vine, play games on the big lawn, snuggle up by the wood-burner with a good book if it rains. The roomy kitchen has excellent kit, sharp knives, a coffee maker and even proper scales if you want to bake.
Stock up at good independent shops in Pickering (15-min drive) which has a market every Monday and a stunning Saxon church. Stride out on bracing walks from the door, or bring bikes for endless cycle routes through the forest.

After two postponements due to the pandemic, we finally made it to the Hayloft for a three-day break, and it was certainly worth the wait. The cottage is superb: very comfortable, clean, and well-equipped, with a gorgeous views over the garden while you do the washing up. Our cockapoo enjoyed sniffing in the garden and going for long walks from the front door. Trips to Runswick Bay, the Farndale daffodil walk, and the Cawthorn Roman Camps added to our enjoyment, and the fish pies on our first evening were an extra treat. Thank you, Philip and Caroline.

This is a fabulous cottage, with nature on its very doorstep: Spring lambs, forest trails, an oasis of a garden and a wide variety of birdsong. It's well-equipped with modern appliances and bathroom fittings, spotlessly clean, has a log burner, lovely views, a sun- trap seating area in the garden , it's well- located for moors & coast, very dog-friendly and with great owners living in the adjacent property. There are many returning guests.

Location
The neighbourhood
The drive up to this spot overlooking Cropton Forest is along winding tree-lined lanes so it feels very rural. Pickering and the local villages have good pubs and you can hop on a steam train through Newtondale - a mini Grand Canyon. A spectacular 25-min drive across the moors takes you to Whitby and Sandsend for the beach and a crab sandwich. Also well worth visiting is York, about an hour away.
Local points of interest from Philip & Caroline Jackson
- Whitby and Sandsend (with their great dog friendly beaches) are just a 25 minute drive over the moors
- Situated within the beautiful North York Moors National Park
- Located 7 miles north of Pickering, the market town which is home to the NYM Steam Railway.
- A perfect base for visiting York, Castle Howard, the walled gardens of Helmsley and Scampston, the Abbey and Terraces of Rievaulx.
- There is a wealth of local pubs and restaurants serving excellent food, from good home cooking to Michelin star treats.
- Star gazing from the garden, biking and walking in Cropton Forest - on the doorstep

Introducing
Philip & Caroline Jackson
Philip and Caroline and their dogs are friendly and welcoming. The couple worked in the hotel industry for years which explains their attention to detail. They both love to take photographs and turn them into artwork, which you’ll see on the walls of The Hayloft.
Caroline and Philip have created an idyll of peace and serenity at The Hayloft. The accommodation is beautiful, the decor and furnishings are superb. All equipement is of a high standard and the walks from the door are plentiful. We stayed in November due to owning a fireworks-shy dog. This was the ideal place, sufficiently remote to be away from bangs and whistles but close enough to Pickering for essential purchases. If you are coming from the North, the drive across Wheeldale Road is spectacular and Whitby is about 35 minutes away, along this road. Overall, a lovely place.
