The Experience

Sometimes city places are no more than a good base from which to explore and see the sights, but this is a truly comfortable landing pad for a group of family or friends. Terracotta tiles glow warmly under soft lighting, William Morris wallpaper and thick curtains cocoon you, gorgeous velvet sofas wait for you (and a book), a long oak refectory table is just the ticket for convivial meals by candlelight and has enough space for everybody to sit with ease.

Conjure up meals in the swish kitchen with all the kit you need or step out to restaurants galore. The bakery next door can deliver your breakfast buns and you’ll find basics like milk, shortbread and crisps waiting for you. Bedrooms (one downstairs) are well-dressed with antiques and pretty fabrics, the attic room has views over rooftops and church spires; bathrooms are warm and bright.

Just off the sitting room is a small courtyard with a table and chairs.

The Georgian townhouse was the perfect venue for our reunion. Situated within easy walking distance of all York's attractions, there are excellent restaurants nearby so we had little need for the well-equipped kitchen. The house's décor is beautiful, the beds comfortable and the large refectory table was an ideal place to gather over breakfast or quizzes.

We came across the recently-renovated Georgian Town House on Walmgate. The house combines every modern convenience but in a Georgian setting. The downstairs space is open, generous and comfortable with a large kitchen and refectory dining table as well as a cosy and private sitting area. The bedrooms are all different, but each one is elegant and beautifully decorated. From the furniture to the fittings to the fireplaces, everywhere is so tasteful! The front door opens onto the street with from which everywhere is accessible by foot. It is by far the finest house we've rented.

Location

The neighbourhood

If you don't already know York then you'll be delighted with what you find. The oldest street in York, the Shambles (used in the filming of Harry Potter), is filled with timber buildings dating back to the 11th century, now with plenty of super shops and a market. The Viking Museum is just round the corner, as is the Barbican Theatre. City centre shopping is a five-minute walk, as is the Minster.

Local points of interest from Beth Davies

York is Europe's best preserved medieval gated city and the medieval Merchant Adventurer's Hall with its charming garden cafe is just down the road. A four minute stroll takes you to the Shambles, which provided inspiration for Harry Potters' Diagon Alley.
Walmgate is a bohemian street full of restaurants, cafes and delis including the much loved 'Hairy Fig', the Michelin Starred Le Cochon Aveugle and the Little Blondie bakery next door which will deliver to your door.
Following the plague, many of York's residents fitted lucky black cats to their buildings to scare away diseased rats! There's a trail you can follow to find them all. Can you spot the cat climbing Walmgate's gate or 'bar', juts up the road from the house?
Visit the Minster, one of the world's most magnificent cathedrals, explore the underground, Viking world of Jorvik, try your hand at an escape room, join a ghost tour and look for Roman soldiers or walk the city walls for stunning views of beautiful York.
The house has a secret staircase that used to be used by the servants. The winders have been carved out to make space for the servants calf muscles! The stairs had been boxed in and we discovered them in their original condition during the restoration.
The early date of the house and the panelling and cornice work in Betty's and Minster have led to the high listing of the house at Grade II* showing its national historic importance. Betty's fireplace was inspired by Batty Langley's Georgian copy book.

Introducing

Beth Davies

Beth did a History Masters at Edinburgh and spent a year living in Bologna while also travelling through Italy. Her experience fostered a love of historic buildings so when this house came on the market she bought it and lovingly rescued it from its drab state. She even sourced reclaimed bricks to match the front elevation and scoured the country for Georgian fireplaces and furniture. She hopes you’ll love the house as much as she does.
