The Experience

This 19th-century fully renovated estate sits in a delightful spot up a private drive. Spend dreamy days in The Sanctuary which has an indoor pool, sauna and steam room, an ice bath and treatment rooms. Wander the beautiful gardens or stride out into glorious countryside. On grim days there are plenty of spaces to unwind indoors, including the light and bright orangery.

Bedrooms are split across two buildings and range from suites to snugs but all are immaculate with feather and down duvets, crisp cotton sheets, robes and slippers and Wildsmith skin products. You are very well fed in a number of different spots, with menus overseen by Tommy Banks and produce from the garden in season.

Ale afficionados will be happy with Beneath the City ‘Woodruff Pilsner’ or Verbalist ‘Lemon Verbena Pale Ale’ and gin lovers can tuck into Cooper King Gin. The wine list is pretty impressive too – summer evenings in the gardens will be sublime.

Reviews

What a special place this is! The sort of place you won’t want to leave. Every corner of the hotel is beautifully designed and the staff are incredibly warm and welcoming. The spa is far from average with unique cryo chamber and ice bath in addition to the pool, sauna, steam room, bubbling spa pool and relaxation room. With views of the garden and the estate to explore, you’ll leave feeling rejuvenated and perfectly set up for the day after a scrummy breakfast.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're between the towns of Whitby and Sandsend, both of which you can walk to. Visit Whitby Abbey, hear some Dracula history, explore Whitby Brewery or have a tour at Whitby Distillery. Hop on the steam train at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, go fishing or book a boat trip. There are fabulous walks and cycles along the coast or up on the moors and there is good birdwatching, so bring binoculars.
