The Experience

Come to stay in a stylish escape, thoughtfully spruced up by owners Ben and Rosie who live next to the house, and explore historic York, the rolling Dales and the constantly evolving local foodie scene.

You stay in a handsome red-brick building set back from the leafy main street. Believed to be the oldest property in the village, now every modern comfort has been added to make staying here a breeze. Step into a swish kitchen/dining/sitting room illuminated by a large automated glass ceiling and a glittering chandelier. Designated cooks will adore the sweep of Cararra marble worktop, two electric ovens with microwaves, steam oven, Aga hob and plate warmers.

There are books, jigsaws and games for rainy days, a private walled garden scented with roses to spill into on warm days, two sitting rooms and three bedrooms (one en suite) decked in reassuring country colours and floral wallpaper.

Reviews

Just a note to say how fantastic Pear Tree House was again. This is our 3rd stay and we all love it so much. Very clean and tidy and spacious. The kitchen is so well stocked with everything you can imagine if you wanted to prepare any meal. Also Yorkshire tea, coffee, sugar supplied. We visited the delightful “Daisy’s Tea Room” opposite the house for an evening meal which was lovely. There is a very handy bus stop outside the house. We hopped on the bus to York (about half an hour) and enjoyed the delights of the fabulous City of York. We will definitely be returning again soon.

Mandi

Our family of 5 enjoyed an exceptional week at Pear Tree House. We appreciated the privacy and tranquillity of the home, a serene courtyard, and an impressive kitchen with a tall glass ceiling and thoughtful additions like two warming drawers and a cooling drawer that made cooking a delight. The selection of books and a cupboard stocked with games catered perfectly to our love of history and cozy family evenings in. Each room was beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, and incredibly comfortable. We were so impressed with the quality and comfort that we booked for next year before we left!

Guests will enjoy relaxing in the splendid open-plan conservatory kitchen, diner and sitting room, where everyone can gather together under the glittering chandelier. Open the French doors onto the private walled courtyard and let the smell of summer roses waft in. Then afterwards sleep in the cosy bedrooms and dream of your next foray into the ancient woodland of the nearby Sutton Park estate.

Location

The neighbourhood

The village tearoom is open Wed-Sun for light lunches and there's a good Italian restaurant just outside the village. York (eight miles) with its cobbled streets, Minster and Betty's tea rooms is a grand day trip; lovely Harrogate and Thirsk are a bit further. Visit Castle Howard (11 miles) or the National Railway Museum in York. The North York Moors and coast await for fantastic walking.

Local points of interest from Ben Galloway

  • The bus to York stops right outside the gate to Pear Tree House
  • Sutton-on-the-Forest has a wonderful Italian restaurant just outside the village called 'Paradiso on the Forest'
  • Walk across the road through ancient woodland and around the neighbouring farmland. Perfect for families with dogs
  • Ben and Rosie live next door and are happy to provide recommendations, help and advice
