The Experience

Walk in to a long rambling bar with stone walls, open fireplace, an eclectic mix of old dining tables and chairs and some cushioned sofas – the decor is informal and the atmosphere relaxed. Food is taken seriously and Rob’s modern British cooking is finding favour with locals and those further afield. Menus are inventive (including a tasting menu) and much is grown on their allotment and in their polytunnel – fresh asparagus, broccoli, strawberries in season. Bread, jams, butter, vinegars and ice creams are all made in-house, meat is from local suppliers.

Bedrooms are inspired by nature, individually decorated and very spacious with super king beds, fresh flowers and soothing colours – you get fresh milk delivered to your door for your morning cuppa. Spotless bathrooms have Noble Isle soaps and lotions.

Taste four different real ales on hand pump, on the terrace in the sunshine. You’re near to York for its wonderful Minster.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're on the edge of the village overlooking fields to the front within the Ouse valley. There are walks from the door or you can head to the Sutton Bank National Park Centre for a myriad of cycling routes and walking trails, including the famous White Horse of Kilburn. Visit Castle Howard for a splendid house and gardens, or Fairfax House in York, near the Museum Gardens.

Local points of interest from Rob & Heloisa Mitchell

  • York's cathedral is one of the biggest in Northern Europe, a stunning example of Gothic, Perpendicular Gothic and Early English building styles, and the Great East Window, finished in 1408, is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world.
  • Castle Howard is still privately owned and home to the Howard family for more than 300 years, this splendid 18th-century house is set in 1,000 acres of fabulous landscape in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
  • The Sutton Bank Centre provides the ideal starting point for exploring the North York Moors. All kinds of cycling routes and walking trails for all abilities begin here, including a walk to the famous White Horse of Kilburn.
  • Fairfax House is a delightful 18th-century building with fantastic stuccowork. The richly decorated interior was designed by York's most distinguished architect, John Carr, and contains the Noel Terry (of Terry's chocolate fame) collection of 18th-century furniture, clocks, paintings and ceramics.
  • Yorkshire Museum has ten acres of botanical gardens right in the heart of the city - The Gardens were established in the 1830s by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society. They're famous for their collections of trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs.
  • Jorvik Viking Center - A futuristic time capsule will transport you around this cutting edge, ground-breaking museum, showing you what living in Viking York was really like, right down to the sounds and smells.

Introducing

Rob & Heloisa Mitchell

The village had been without a pub for six years when Matthew Gath of Yorvik Homes decided to put that to rights. He found the ideal people to run it in husband and wife team Rob and Heloisa. Rob kicked off his career at Skibo Castle then moved to London to become sous-chef at Chez Bruce by the age of 19. A meteoric run in London earned him a Bib Gourmand and two rosettes. You will be well fed.
