The Experience

Commissioned circa 1080 by the first Norman Archbishop, this is probably the oldest continuously occupied house in Britain – there is history at every turn. The library and the oak-panelled Long Gallery are special indeed – lovely places to sit with a book and a glass of wine.

Bedrooms, apart from one, are on the second floor and all are sumptuous with beautifully dressed beds, some have views of the city walls, others of the kitchen garden and you’ll find Clarins treats in the bathrooms. Wake to a hearty breakfast, cooked to order and using ingredients as local as possible. Dinner is in The Bow Room, a fine dining restaurant serving a choice of a tasting menu or à la carte with talented Head Chef Ian Doyle leading the team.

The garden is an oasis of green and calm in the heart of the city, planted with biodiversity in mind and filled with wildlife.

Reviews

This place is bursting with history and character and is perfectly situated to explore the city. The gardens are incredibly quiet with direct access to the city walls and view of the very impressive Minster. Produce grown in the kitchen garden is perfectly presented in The Bow Room Restaurant.
