The Experience
You’re high on the hill with huge views of Wharfedale: mountains rise, the river roars and in summer you can watch the cricket team toil on the pitch below. Sink into a soft sofa in the sitting room by a warming wood-burner, order a drink from the bar, play board games or read.
There’s a sense of space, with one room flowing into another, the bar, restaurant and conservatory united by an open-plan feel. In the bedrooms (all different) find Nespresso machines, homemade ginger biscuits and en suite bathrooms with robes, Fikkerts soaps and lotions and fluffy towels. A 20-minute drive will take you to the spa at their sister hotel – you have free entry during your stay.
Back downstairs, delicious food is cooked by chef George Marsh – British classics (fish pie is a favourite) from local ingredients – R & J in Ripon supply meat, and lamb is from Eshton Herdwicks. The wine list is thoughtful and you can drink local ales from Masham Brewery.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're surrounded by amazing countryside for walking, cycling, fishing, fell climbing and nature watching. The Cavendish Pavillion riverside café on the banks of the river Wharfe is open every day and you get a 10% discount as part of your stay. Explore little Grassington, a ten-minute drive where All Creatures Great and Small was filmed – there's a National Park Centre here too.
Local points of interest from Devonshire Group
- Haworth: A small historic town that was once the home of the Brontë Sisters and retains all the old features and shops of that period. It is located in the Pennines above Bradford, 20 miles from the hotel.
- Harrogate: A spa town in North Yorkshire 20 miles from the hotel. The town is a popular tourist destination and its visitor attractions include its spa waters, Turkish Baths and the RHS Harlow Carr gardens.
- Ilkley Moor is part of Rombalds Moor, between Ilkley and Keighley (20 mins). The moor, 402m above sea level, is famous as the inspiration for the Yorkshire county anthem ”On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at” and the famous iconic rock formation, the Cow and Calf.
- The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is a 5-mile-long branch line that served mills and villages in the Worth Valley and is now a heritage railway line in West Yorkshire, running from Keighley to Oxenhope with traditional Steam engine drawn carriages.
- Bolton Abbey is in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales on the banks of the River Wharfe on which the hotel sits. With 30,000 acres of beautiful countryside, 80 miles of footpaths and ample space to run around, there is something for all ages.

When you step through the doors of the Devonshire Fell Hotel cares and woes will melt away, as you marvel at the splendid views, breathe in the clean Yorkshire air, relax on the floral sofas admiring Kitty's contemporary art work. After a hearty breakfast, take a walk to Simon's Seat where it's claimed one of the Three Wise Men wandered or saddle up for a challenge over the dramatic landscape.
