Come for Scandi chic on a smart estate with some perfectly well-priced rooms. It’s like summer camp, only for adults – a place designed for fun. Expect a striking simplicity with airy colours, white linen, padded bedheads, robes in sparkling bathrooms. Rooms are scattered about in pretty buildings on the hill, the suites altogether fancier with claw-foot baths in the room, huge beds, maybe a sofa or a wood-burner, too. They spiral around a central lodge, where you can eat, drink and be merry. If the style is coolly contemporary, then the feel is cosy and informal, with lovely staff on hand to help. The big bar is the hub: sofas galore, cool colours, walls of glass that open onto a terrace, a funky wood-burner for winter nights. There’s a games room for pool and table football and 400 acres of countryside to explore from the door. Deer roam the hill, there’s a nature trail and maps for joggers. As for the food, you can eat in the bar, the restaurant, or out on the terrace in good weather.
A wonderful wedding anniversary stay in the Shepherd's Huts. The bar and communal areas were a real highlight, being able to relax with the papers and an open fire. We loved the boot room, to be able to help yourself to a pair of wellies and a map and take a walk in the surrounding countryside. It's just a shame we didn't get to take advantage of the cinema on this trip - one for next time!
