The Experience
You’re close to the bridge with beautiful views across the river to the churchyard. Outside, a terrace at the front catches the sun, with this 18th-century listed building standing grandly behind. It’s a lovely spot, good enough for Samuel Spode to paint; a copy of his work hangs here, the real thing waits in the town’s museum.
Inside, you get that winning combination of restful rooms, lovely food and well-kept ales, with cakes and coffee available all day. You’ll find stripped floors, hanging lamps, exposed stone walls, then sofas in front of an open fire. Helpful staff weave about, delivering food that makes you smile, perhaps Dorset crab on toast, pork belly with sea salt crackling, vanilla panna cotta with rhubarb jelly.
Most of the bedrooms have river views, two have baths in the room, mezzanine doubles have window seats where you can watch the river pass. Walk, swim, kayak, wander the town with its ancient buildings.

We had such a lovely night here. We stayed in one of the mezzanine rooms which was superb: stylish furnishings, comfy bed and huge windows for the amazing views onto the river. Breakfast was the biggest treat of all (which was served until a leisurely 11am!) with a huge spread of croissants, pain au chocolats, fresh yogurts with compote as well as a full cooked menu with plenty of veggie options. If we find ourselves in lovely Bradford on Avon again, we'll definitely be staying here!

Location
The neighbourhood
New visitors to Bradford-on-Avon will be bowled over by the buildings – like a mini-Bath with an impressive history going back to the Romans. The 14th-century Tithe barn, 51 metres long with an amazing timber cruck roof, is one of the largest in England. Lovely walks will take you along the river through woodland and into open countryside. Walk to pretty Freshford for a pint at the inn.
Local points of interest from Rob & Camille Greacen
- There’s a museum in the town centre where you can discover the heritage of the town and surrounding villages, and if music is more your thing then Bradford on Avon boasts a 300 seat concert hall, renowned for “the finest acoustics outside London”.
- The Wiltshire Music Centre is at the top of town and hosts more 90 concerts a year featuring world-class folk, jazz and world music artists.
- There's a Saxon Church just off Church Street, on the opposite side of the river, and as you walk there you’ll go over the Town Bridge and lock up, probably the most familiar part of Bradford on Avon as it appears in nearly every photograph of the town.
- The 14th Century Tithe Barn on Pound Lane has an amazing timber cruck roof and is considered one of the country’s finest examples of medieval monastic barns.
- There’s a local swimming pool 50 yards away along the river path towards the station and if you like water but don’t really want to get wet then the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust run regular boat trips between April and October.
- Bath is only a few minutes away by train (or car) and trains usually run every 15 – 20 minutes. Approximately 50 minutes away is the City of Wells, the smallest city in England with its impressive Cathedral and stunning medieval cobbled street.

Didn't stay but did meet friends for what turned out to be a truly exceptional lunch. Really well cooked, thoughtful food, served by hugely likeable people in an inspiring room with lovely views. And the sun shone.
