The Experience

An attractive Cotswold stone coaching inn with a relaxed, informal atmosphere. In the heart of a genteel village, not far from elegant Malmesbury and handy for the Badminton Horse Trials and visiting Westonbirt Arboretum, the inn is popular with locals and visitors who come to dine or stay the night.

Original features are celebrated with a cosy, stylish revamp. Quaff ale in the rustic-smart bar, dine on locally sourced and innovative dishes at scrubbed oak tables in the candlelit dining room, warm up by the glowing log fire after a country stomp with the dog. This is a flexible space for celebratory meals too. There’s a touch of magic to the secret walled garden, perfect for summer evening drinks and dinner.

Upstairs, five smart bedrooms come adorned in soothing Farrow & Ball colours – expect feather duvets on big beds, fresh coffee and homemade biscuits, Roberts radios and spoiling en suites.

Location

The neighbourhood

The charming market town of Malmesbury is three miles down the road. Westonbirt Arboretum has 600 acres of some of the oldest, tallest and rarest trees in the country. The Cotswold Water Park and Chavenage House make for super family days out. Woodchester Park (NT) is one of the region's lesser-known gems – a spectacular, Gothic-style mansion circled by five glassy lochs near Stroud.

Local points of interest from

  • The Horse & Groom is the perfect base for exploring the wider Wiltshire area and the world-class walking, cycling and dog-walking opportunities in and around the Cotswolds.
  • Malmesbury itself has a long history, with Malmesbury Abbey dating back to 676. The market town of Royal Wootton Bassett is nearby, offering an abundance of shops, restaurants and history of its own.
  • Home to one of Britain’s scariest junctions and several household names, Swindon has many claims to fame. It's become a bustling hub of fashion and entertainment since its humble beginnings as a market town.
  • Visit Corsham Court and Estate, the National Trust site of Lacock Abbey, the beautiful village of Castle Combe and the historic city of Bath.
  • Slightly further afield is the Neolithic henge monument of Avebury, which is one of the most well-known prehistoric sites in the United Kingdom.
