The Gates, Castle Combe

With no street lights or TV aerials, there is nothing to detract from the beauty of the listed buildings, some of which date back to the medieval times. Step through the oak door of The Gates to find oak timbers, original stone flags, mullioned and leaded windows and a huge stone fireplace.

The sitting room is a good size with a warming wood-burner, smart TV and books – a lovely space to hunker down if it’s raining. Find all you need to whip up a feast in the kitchen: cookery books, a central island for prepping and a big wooden table for joiners-in. You’re left generous basics and enough for your first breakfast if you arrive without.

Three bedrooms are upstairs – the master with a stunning stained glass tracery window and free-standing bath, a double with an en suite shower and a twin with a separate shower room. All have gorgeous views over the main street or churchyard and well-dressed beds. It’ll be very quiet, and dark, at night.
