The Experience

With no street lights or TV aerials, there is nothing to detract from the beauty of the listed buildings, some of which date back to the medieval times. Step through the oak door of The Gates to find oak timbers, original stone flags, mullioned and leaded windows and a huge stone fireplace.

The sitting room is a good size with a warming wood-burner, smart TV and books – a lovely space to hunker down if it’s raining. Find all you need to whip up a feast in the kitchen: cookery books, a central island for prepping and a big wooden table for joiners-in. You’re left generous basics and enough for your first breakfast if you arrive without.

Three bedrooms are upstairs – the master with a stunning stained glass tracery window and free-standing bath, a double with an en suite shower and a twin with a separate shower room. All have gorgeous views over the main street or churchyard and well-dressed beds. It’ll be very quiet, and dark, at night.

Reviews

Come for a slice of English village life from hundreds of years ago with no modern buildings in sight, the beautiful market square reminiscent of a Hardy novel and this very cosy, spacious cottage in the throng of it all. Fabulous walks, good pubs and farm shops, NT properties and gardens await.

Location

The neighbourhood

Take a tour of St Andrew's Church next door with its faceless medieval clock or pay a green fee to play on the stunning golf course. There are two pubs in the village – one is good for a pie and a pint, the other a bit smarter. Allington Farm Shop is a 10-minute drive for good local food and a bustling café. Westonbirt Arboretum, NT Lacock, Tetbury and Cirencester are close; Bath is 12 miles.

Local points of interest from Alyson Ryan

  • The Manor House Hotel - for a lovely Afternoon Tea in the beautiful gardens or a special dinner at the Michelin star Bybrook Restaurant.
  • Play a round of golf at the stunning 18 hole The Manor House Golf Course.

Introducing

Alyson Ryan

Alyson and Sean bought the cottage in 2004 after it was badly damaged in a fire. Bringing the building back to life was their 'passion project' and you'll find a book with photographs showing you how they managed it. Sean, who grew up nearby is responsible for making sure as many of the ancient beams and floorboards as possible were restored rather than replaced. Alyson has a background in design.
