The Experience
Much of this fascinating house was restored by visionary designer Mark Wilkinson. He’s left an amazing legacy; every bit of wood was carved or planed by his company – from the kitchen, bathrooms and bookshelves to the unique furniture. He was likened by a journalist as a mix between Caractacus Potts and Peter Pan for his inventiveness and sense of humour – find quirky pulley systems on bathroom doors and to lift the chandeliers up and down in the enormous vaulted sitting room, and so much more.
Cynthia and family have a long history of friendly hosting and they’re very happy to share their magical home with guests. There’s a gym, six acres of garden to explore – and a wonderful little round house by one of the lakes for chats by the wood-burner.
Bedrooms are all different: Art Deco headboards in some, beams in another, silk covers and curtains galore. Cynthia collects cookery books (hundreds) and breakfast will be good.

Cynthia was the most gracious and kind host when we stayed at Brook House for visiting great English gardens in the south west in May. Of all the wonderful B&Bs we found through Sawday's, this was one of the very best. The house is designed and decorated in the most inspirational way, the garden is large and has lakes, meadows and very nice flowers. We slept wonderfully and enjoyed the clever design and great comfort of the en suite rooms. Breakfast was first class, with wonderful berries and tasteful porridge. Having conversations with Cynthia was very interesting and inspiring.

Brook House is a fabulous place to visit. This was our first visit and yet we were greeted by Cynthia like old friends and offered wonderful hospitality. Cynthia’s late husband’s creativity and craftsmanship is everywhere in the house; her home is stunning and filled with the family’s collection of beautiful furniture and objects d’art – every piece has a story to tell! Breakfast was delicious. Our room was extremely comfortable, beautifully furnished, lovely linen on the bed and thick fluffy bath towels. The extensive gardens with 2 lakes were a delight to wander around and explore.

Our badminton bound group of 4 were bowled over by the welcome at Brook House. From the moment we arrived, Cynthia and puppy Fin were the perfect country house weekend hosts. The house is a wonder of wooden and wooded delights, the creative genius of the late Mark Wilkinson is everywhere, at every turn, every stair step, every door hinge. The creature comforts of Cynthia are abundant in the sumptuous décor, furniture , bed linen, not to mention the food! Oh that breakfast of fruits, salmon, fresh eggs etc, just delicious. - The garden is beautiful too... need more time here, we will return.

What an outstanding and rare treat to stay at Brook House and enjoy the delightful warmth of Cynthia's hospitality. We 4 Badminton bound ladies are used to our creature comforts, but Brook House is by far the most beautiful place we have stayed over the years. The bedrooms and en-suites are sumptuous, the house spectacularly designed, country and quirky, so easy to lose oneself in all the optical treasures, beautiful gardens and puppy play time. Cynthia's breakfasts are a feast, fresh, beautifully cooked and presented, and catering for every taste and need. we will return. XX

Fantastic visit to Brook House! We stayed for 3 nights with friends on a walking few days in the area - it was just fabulous! We just couldn't believe how gorgeous the House was - outstanding. So so beautifully presented, the ensuite rooms were extremely comfortable and luxurious, the grounds were extensive with a magical lake (complete with swans/ducks), lovely gardens. Brook House itself was so very special and has to be seen to be believed! Loads of walks in the area so just park your car and walk. Nearest pub within walking distance and excellent.....

Brook House was one of the most memorable of the many B&Bs we've stayed in over many years. Being designed down to the last detail by Mark Wilkinson, it is truly unique. Our room was delightful. Cynthia is the perfect hostess - apart from serving sumptuous breakfasts, she made us very welcome indeed and we enjoyed a great deal of stimulating conversation, which was a real bonus. We look forward to coming back.

Brook House was the perfect place to visit family in the area and Cynthia, with her faithful hounds, were the perfect hosts. Growing up nearby we had long been fans of Mark’s amazing cabinetry. It was a dream come true to be surrounded by such wonderful artistry. The room was so comfortable and the breakfast so delicious, the hardest part was getting motivated to leave each morning. Thankfully I have good reason to return, hopefully soon and often!

Such a unique and inspiring home where every detail is made to the finest standard! If we could give Cynthia, Victoria and Brook House more than 10 stars we would! It's an absolutely unique and wonderful place with the friendliest of hosts and dogs! Breakfast was tailor-made and so generous. It would take more than the two days we spent there to absorb everything there is to see. We so enjoyed spendng time with Cynthia - it was as if she had all the time in the world to chat when in reality she is an incredibly busy and hard-working lady. She lit a fire in the snug and let us watch the rugby there - such a welcoming touch. We will certainly be back.

A hidden gem - so charming, full of character and warmth. We were bowed over by the thoughtfulness and generosity of Cynthia and Victoria. They are such kind people and took great care of us from booking us restaurants, reaching out to us in advance for our bespoke breakfast requests, welcome treats including a massive fruit platter and letting us roam around on their grounds. We so enjoyed talking to them and relaxing in their home. We had the whole floor to ourselves and enjoyed the freedom of having a little kitchen. We will be returning soon! Highly recommend!

Brook House is magical - you have to see it for yourself. The house is beautiful - full of charm, with a lot of warmth, heart and soul. The people in the house are the same. Victoria was so helpful in our planning and Cynthia a wonderful host - who cooks an incredible breakfast. We felt completely free to roam around the house and grounds as we pleased - our favourite spot was down by the water. The location is perfect - quiet and peaceful, whilst being close to plenty of places to visit in the area. I only have positive things to say - we were so well looked after we didn’t want to leave!

We were made most welcome by Cynthia and Victoria and it was a great and comfortable place to spend my birthday. The meals were very good and plentiful. We were interested in the use of wood, the craftsmanship and ideas that had gone into the making of a unique house, and would loved to have spent more time looking at all its features and wandering in the garden. Perhaps another day. It was a most enjoyable two days.

A truly unique and special place to stay. The house, interiors and gardens are stunningly beautiful but this is secondary to the very warm welcome and fabulous hospitality we received whilst staying there. Cynthia and Victoria are fantastic hosts and everything we required and more was anticipated by them. The breakfast was fantastic and they made us feel very much at home. Very highly recommended.

Location
The neighbourhood
On the outskirts of Bromham village, and the drive up to the house is through woodland. Bowood House and gardens are a 15-minute drive; Lacock Abbey and village are a bit closer – they’ve been used as film locations for Pride & Prejudice, Cranford, Emma and the Harry Potter films. Castle Combe, picturesque village and home to the car and cycle racetrack, is 15 miles. Bath and Stonehenge are within 20.
Local points of interest from Cynthia Wilkinson
- What do Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice, Cranford and Downton Abbey have in common? Lacock! In five minutes you're in the beautiful, historic village of Lacock. Explore the abbey, buy handmade gifts or enjoy a beer in one of the gorgeous pubs!
- Bath is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK and is only 30 minutes away. Shopping, beautiful buildings, the Roman Baths, fantastic restaurants, Thermae Bath Spa with it's roof top pool ... the list goes on. You could even catch the rugby at the REC.
- Bowood House & Gardens is 5 minutes away and boasts an impressive resume for the perfect family day out; an adventure playground for the kids, golfing for Dad and a spa for Mum. If they're out, don't miss the unbelievable Rhododendrons - simply magical!
- "Lions, Tigers & Bears oh my" Longleat Safari Park offers some wonderful experiences for the whole family to enjoy; Feed wild birds as they sit on your head, explore Longleat House, visit Anne the rescued Elephant! I'd just be careful of the monkeys …
- You're just a stones throw away from some of the most ancient stones in the world, Avebury and Stonehenge. Just 10 minutes from Avebury, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Longbarrow and a mere 40 minutes from UNESCO World Heritage site, Stonehenge.
- Antique hunting in Marlborough and Hungerford is an absolute must for anyone wanting to pick up something special or even just peruse the Aladdin's Caves in these two quintessentially English towns. The independent shops and restaurants are to die for too

Introducing
Cynthia Wilkinson
Mark and Cynthia Wilkinson moved to Brook House in 1999; they spent 11 years building and restoring the house as well as workshops and stable block. Mark sadly died in 2017. Along with Cynthia, various family members live on site - Victoria, Greg and Becks; there will always be someone on hand to welcome guests as they need to be buzzed through the gates. They’re all absolutely charming.
Brook House was absolutely stunning, a true marvel of architecture and design, and a great place to unwind and relax. Cynthia is a wonderful person and host. The breakfasts were amazing. We would love to visit again.
