The Experience
Enter to a mouth-watering aroma of imaginative dishes from chef/co-patron Sarah Keightley – as much as possible is seasonal and sourced from local producers. There’s space for everyone, from the pool room to the restaurant to the beautiful flagged bar with fire and wood-burning stove.
There are seven bedrooms too, the quietest at the back, and all with Nespresso machines, Egyptian cotton bed linen, fluffy towels and nice soaps and lotions. Dogs are welcome in this ancient warren of a pub where canine sketches adorn the walls and there’s a special menu for pooches. It is cheerful, hospitable, and breakfasts are worth waking up for.
Summer days will be spent on the flower-bedecked terrace and spacious lawn – children can run around safely while you chatter, sample some local ale and check out the menu. Walk it off in the glorious Cotswolds with footpaths leading from the door; Moreton-in-Marsh is just over six miles.

We enjoyed our stay as did our golden retriever. I did fail to notice that they didn't open till 6pm. Since we arrived about 4pm this could have been awkward. However we found one of the ladies who was very welcoming and helpful. The local dog owners are sociable - nice!

Location
The neighbourhood
Long Compton is steeped in history and just down the hill from the Rollright Stones. Historians will adore the links to the Civil War, witchcraft and the lychgate of the church. Stay in for fortnightly Sunday evening quizzes from October to March or head out to explore Cotswold villages and towns. You're bang in between Stratford and Oxford and two hours from London.
Local points of interest from Lisa & Sarah
- Originally built as a coaching inn in 1748, our Grade II listed free house is located in the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
- With tales of witches in the village and a nearby prehistoric stone circle (the Roll Right Stones), there is as much of interest to the historian as there is the tourist.
- The Rollright Stones is a ancient site consisting of three main elements, The Kings Men stone circle, the King Stone, and the Whispering Knights.
- Just a 15 minute drive away in Moreton in Marsh lies Batsford Arboretum - a must-visit for families and a great opportunity to take in the great outdoors!
- Nearby in beautiful Stratford upon Avon you'll find Shakespeare's Birthplace - and you can even take your dog around the gardens!
- Head further into Oxfordshire, and after just a 25 minute drive you'll find the 18th Century Blenheim Palace in Woodstock - home to the 12th Duke of Malborough, World Heritage Site & all-round great day out.

We have just enjoyed a lovely traditional Sunday lunch. So delighted to find the warm friendly atmosphere, good service and delicious food were the same if not better than pre covid memories! We would highly recommend the Red Lion for a meal. The only reason we have not stayed is because we live locally!!
