The Experience
Flanked by mature olive trees, the front door leads you into the warm interiors with chunky beams, tiled floors and a wood-burning stove. Popular with locals and visitors alike, there’s a happy buzz about this place. When the sun shines everybody spills out into the garden for comfortable seating, pots of fresh flowers on the tables, deciduous woodland above.
Bedrooms, either above the inn or in one of two attractive converted barns overlooking a smooth lawn, are tastefully decorated with thick mattresses, crisp white cotton and generous shower rooms. Two have outdoor seating areas and ten are dog friendly. Food is good, starting with breakfasts of fresh smoothies, spiced banana bread, Turkish eggs and the usual suspects. Lunch and dinner menus feature pub classics along with fine dining options, mostly from locally sourced and seasonal produce.
Walk it off in Kingley Vale forest – some of the most ancient trees in Britain.

Location
The neighbourhood
The pub is right next to Kingley Vale, which also has one of the finest yew forests in Western Europe. Other than that you can walk your socks off on the Sussex Downs. There's a good wine shop next to the pub but no shop. Nearest village is Compton (4.3 miles) for a shop. Chichester is a ten-minute drive for shops, restaurants and an excellent theatre. Petersfield is also a ten-minute drive.

Introducing
Butcombe Brewery
Butcombe Pubs and Inns have their own award-winning brewery in Wrington, Bristol producing over 250,000 pints a week. Their passion for great beer extends to their passion for great pubs in the South and South West of England. They are an independent, eclectic bunch with a focus on excellent food and drink, and creating truly memorable experiences.
I can't wait to go back to the White Horse to sample their amazing food and walk in the stunning ancient woods nearby. Whether in cold weather indoors or outside in summer in their spacious garden, it will be special.
