The Experience
The sitting room is spacious, elegant and softly-coloured. If you can’t be outdoors you’ll be comfortable in here with pretty fabrics, an open fire and lots of books on one wall. Board games and a TV mean rainy days can be relaxing. When the sun shines you can sit outdoors and look at the fields beyond – there’s a little table and chairs and a barbecue out here too.
The kitchen has a high ceiling, a lovely wooden table and all the kit cooks might need. If you stay a week you’ll find fruit and vegetables, eggs from their chickens and a bottle of wine – Jo can order food for you with a bit of notice. You can also use the pool and hot tub, which have glorious views, so do ask ahead. Walks and cycles start from the door.
Return to pretty bedrooms (one double, one twin) with antique furniture, sumptuous curtains and views over the garden; bathrooms are newly refurbished with imaginative colours. It’s very quiet.

Location
The neighbourhood
It feels quite remote but is just one mile from Lodsworth for a good pub, The Hollist Arms and a farm shop. The Halfway Bridge is a bit further on and then 2.5 miles away is the Horse Guards Inn. Petworth, a perfect little market town with lots of restaurants, shops and antiques is 3.6 miles. Petworth House (NT) has a very fine art collection and a 700-acre deer park to explore.

Introducing
Jo Clevely
Jo and Rupert (who was in the wine business) lived in Australia for 9 years. When they returned to the UK in the 90s they became involved in refurbishing London pubs (with Jo at the helm). They sold to Young's in 2010 and bought the family house. Jo has put her interior design skills to good use and they've created a lovely space for people wanting to escape to the countryside.
I loved this place, which is ideal for those wanting to escape from city life and enjoy this attractive cottage and the beautiful countryside. You have easy access to interesting Sussex villages and pubs, as well as to other attractions such as Goodwood (20 mins) and the polo in Cowdray Par. Jo and Rupert have created a truly delightful and attractive place which guests will enjoy immensely.
