The Experience

A sweetly renovated little brick and flint Dairy building which shares a rustic courtyard with the owners’ large barn – and its own dear little shepherd’s hut. Inside you’ll feel private and cosy, views are over the orchard and garden. Walk straight in to a roomy porch with oak boarding and the kitchen with its original brick floor, an old pine dresser with pretty china, pale blue cupboards and plenty of stuff for even the most demanding cook. The white-painted bathroom is off here, with painstakingly-restored terracotta floor tiles, a proper big white bath and a window. The open-plan sitting room has white walls with a dash of warming red, a white wooden painted floor, comfy sofa, lots of interesting books, an electric wood-burner and an antique chair. Sleep like a log in the squishiest bed with feather and down; your buttery yellow bedroom has one exposed flint wall and thick fabrics. Creative Jinks (who designs and makes jewellery and runs courses) leaves you fresh eggs, flowers, fruit and some basics, but you can walk along the footpath all the way to Ditchling. Breakfast in the east facing courtyard, spend evenings in your own garden with views over the South Downs or bunk down in the thoroughly authentic shepherd’s hut.

Lovely place. Lovely people. This is a warmly curated gem nestled near the downs and exuding rustic charm, with lots of creative flourishes. You will be cosy and relaxed in this pretty dairy now cottage, created by Jinx and Steve...take your wellies if weather looks changeable and you will be very happy here.

We spent 4 nights in the Dairy, we were very lucky with the weather and chose a relatively dry sunny week. Lots of walks in the area, but it was too wet underfoot to explore them, but a great place for our dogs with a little porch and enclosed small area for them mornings and evenings. Bowls, towels blankets provided. Beautiful views across the Downs from the garden. Cosy, warm, comfortable accommodation. Breakfast parcel was a delight. Thank you Jinx and Steve.

The Dairy was an idyllic retreat in the delightful rural village of Streat in East Sussex. Jinks was a fabulous host and the sweet cottage was thoughtfully appointed with everything we needed to feel at home. The welcome gift of croissants, local jam, local eggs and milk was such a lovely unexpected touch. I highly recommend The Dairy for a relaxing and secluded getaway.

The Dairy is the very definition of a country escape. A real haven in the Sussex countryside. Jinx and Steve have lived in the old house next door here for decades, and the place is oozing with artistic character. The interior is rustic in style and cosy, quaint but not mod con (except for the induction hob). The bed was comfortable and we were woken by a friendly sheep bah-ing outside the window in the morning. The view onto orchards from the sitting room is oozes romantic English countryside.

The Dairy is a delight and the Shepherd's Hut was perfectly imperfect in every way. I slept in the Hut for a few nights and felt I was back in my grandparents' beach shack with a wonderful wood smell. I left the tiny shutters open at night, watching the moon rise whilst an owl hooted in a nearby hollow. Heavenly. The Dairy had vintage linen tablecloths, and an old world charm yet with everything that you need. Tucked in the lanes just behind the South Downs this is a perfect base for country walks, great pubs and stunning views from the top of the Downs. Everything is within walking distance.

An absolute gem! Wonderfully thoughtful touches from the lovely hosts and a beautifully appointed, incredibly comfortable place to stay. Best night's sleep in years! I will be rebooking just as soon as I can.

We loved our stay at The Dairy. Beautiful, comfortable and relaxing cottage. Stunning setting, with a peaceful garden to enjoy fantastic views of the Downs. Lovely long walks, great cycling. Welcoming pubs, very pretty villages. Jinks and Steve have created a haven of natural beauty, we shall be back for more!

We had a lovely stay with Jinks & Steve, the dairy is welcoming & homely very comfortable with all you need. Perfectly located for the South Downs & lots of good walks without cars, also only 20 min from the sea. You also have Suzys homemade jams & cakes at the gate. Jinks also gives you all the information you need for pubs, provisions & places to visit. We would highly recommend the dairy & would return.

A lovely stay in The Dairy. Very friendly and welcoming hosts, Jinks and Steve. A great base for walking in the South Downs and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Colorful, spacious, comfortable place to stay. We never met Jinks but did speak with her husband who enlightened us on the local birds - he identified one as a cuckoo bird, first time for us to hear a real one! Great location, very peaceful. We went for a stroll across the fields each evening. Had the best meal of our trip at the nearby Jolly Sportsman. Spent our days visiting numerous National Trust castles (we had passes) in the area. Please stay here.

Paradise for humans and the dog. The dairy is beautiful, flint & brick, extremely cosy, luxurious but individual and not 'in your face' . We called it 'home', from the first day. Dog walks on the doorstep, in all directions. Hosts charming, helpful, available and discrete. Streat is a beautiful location, off the beaten track, with pretty flint church (next to the dairy); the only trouble is that, being so attractive, this part of Sussex has too many cars using even single lanes country tracks. Thanks for a marvellous stay.

Marie, Belleme

Absolutely amazing place. Beautifully restored, gorgeous linens, lots of lovely up cycled things. Area is lovely. The barn and courtyard idyllic. Steve and Jinks interesting, friendly warm. Couldn't rate it highly enough, just a shame it's five hundred miles from us!

  • Beautiful, unspoilt rural location, surrounded by fields, footpaths and birdsong, within the South Downs National Park. Wonderful walking countryside and rolling hills - local high spots include Wolstonbury Hill, Devil's Dyke and Firle Beacon.
  • The Dairy is part of the curtilage of Streat Place Barn, built around 1600, and traditionally restored by us over the last 30 years.
  • The historic town of Lewes is just 7 miles away - enjoy a high street full of local shops, artisan makers and lovely cafés. The bustling city of Brighton, with it's beach too, is just 10 miles away.
  • There are some wonderful places to eat out just a stones throw from The Dairy, perfectly walkable to, they include 'The Jolly Sportsman' in East Chiltington, 'The Bull' in Ditchling and 'The Half Moon' in Plumpton.
  • We have culture in abundance - from the decadent escapism of 'Glyndebourne Opera', the beautiful 'Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft', the inspiring 'Charleston Farmhouse' and 'Farley's Farmhouse'.
