The Experience

You’ll feel quite private staying in the cottage but you can get involved with the shared cricket pitch, tennis court and well-equipped games room – plus the zip wire, tree house and fishing lake too. There are 17 beautifully-tended acres (parts designed by Gertrude Jekyll) to freely wander with mature trees, a lily pond and sweeping views of the South Downs.

The rose-clad cottage is deeply comfortable with a roaring Inglenook fire for wet days, a generous kitchen and a pretty conservatory leading out to a terrace with loungers. There’s space to eat in the kitchen, on the terrace or in the dining room. Bedrooms are upstairs, the master has an en suite and the other two share a shower room downstairs.

If you feel like venturing off the estate you’re surrounded by pretty villages; Ashurst is only two miles. Walks and cycles on the Downs are worth it too.

Reviews

What a fabulous Estate this is! How lucky we are to find it. Full of magical nooks and glorious grounds. We have swum in the lake, played tennis, zip wired and had a truly wonderful time. From the moment we came through the gate at the bottom of the drive we knew we had found a truly special place. We are already looking forward to our next visit. Thank you to all the team for creating this sanctuary. With huge thanks

Eddie, London

Thank you so much yet again for a most magical stay celebrating our silver wedding anniversary. Holds so many precious memories for our family. The cottage is so comfortable and cosy. Highlights this trip were a fabulous massage and the chefs scrumptious feast. See you all very soon'

Lara, London

'We had a wonderful few days in this oasis of tranquillity. We had the opportunity of leaving the estate to explore but we decided to stay ad enjoy this beautiful place. We all enjoyed the tennis; we mastered the zip wire, and we even caught a few fish with Mike. We loved every minute! We appreciated the attention to detail, the quality, and the impressive welcome hamper of local produce! Thank you for all your help. We had a few memorable days, and we hope to come again.

Michael, London

Lovely short stay in a luxurious estate. Zoe was most pleasant and helpful. Would recommend it for both families and couples looking to escape

Jonathan, Oxford

The Cottage is an incredibly attractive home with old beams and soft red brick, but cleverly converted so that nothing is lacking. I would enjoy the outside garden and sitting area with its wonderful views in warm weather and snuggle up next to the enormous fire in the winter. I might like to take one of the bikes they provide and explore the local countryside - some of the best in Sussex.

Location

The neighbourhood

If you forget your boots, there are wellies to borrow in almost every size. For eating out there is The Fountain Inn gastro-pub (2 miles) and guests rave about The Sylvan Oak in Findon, 8 miles. It’s 7 miles to Wiston Estate winery for renowned sparkling wines and 4.5 miles to the Norman Bramber Castle.

Local points of interest from Michael

  • Neighbour, Farmer Derek, will (by prior arrangement) happily guide you around his working farm on the Wiston Estate which boasts a variety of produce all year around as well as cattle, sheep and much more. He's a passionate educator of all matters rural.
  • You might well catch sight of longhorn cattle, Tamworth pigs or Peregrin falcons if you take a sunrise or dusk walk around the neighbouring Knepp Castle Estate, famous for their innovative rewilding programme and the storks which hatched there in 2020.
  • The nearby picturesque village of Steyning boasts Cobblestone Walk and a well stocked bookshop renowned for it’s fabulous collection of signed copies of numerous Julia Donaldson books (author of The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom & over 100 other titles).
  • Walk up Chanctonbury Ring, Cycle from Devil's Dyke to Ditchling Beacon or stroll along the south coast beaches, some of which are a mere 20 minutes drive away. There are horse riding stables nearby and Shoreham airport offers helicopter flying experiences.
  • You can support the RAF Benevolent Fund by taking ride on a spitfire simulator just a short drive away in Billingshurst; or consider a visit to Petworth or Arundel; or to one of many National Trust Gardens or to a local award winning vineyard.
  • We have teamed up with several local providers offering on site fine dining, beauty treatments, guided Pilates or, for example, hands on experience with a local fisherman or blacksmith - so let us know what you'd like & we'll try to organize it.

Introducing

Michael

Michael is the second-generation owner of Honeybridge Estate, which has been in his family for over 40 years. He and his wife recently renovated the whole estate, and although they live in London, they love to use the property when they can. You're looked after by the capable Zoe, who lives locally; she’s on hand during your stay to organise pampering and personalised treats if you’d like them.
