The Experience

Walk into a small corridor with hanging space and a shower room, then up the stairs to your hideaway bedroom and kitchen. The feel is quite roomy and the design is good, uncluttered yet very comfortable. A sofa waits near the huge window-with-the-view for reading or simply sitting, gazing at nature and three pet sheep. The kitchen is small but packs a punch – both smart and functional and you’ll find some basics to keep you going.

The bed faces the view and is very well dressed with White Company linen and Devon Duvets wool bedding – a good spot for enjoying a morning cuppa and deciding on your next walk. Sit on the east side of the barn and you have a lovely view of the church with its 3,000-year-old yew tree; round the corner is a spacious terrace with seating, barbecue and fire pit.

Just behind the barn are the remains of an important medieval manor house with a history worth finding out about.

Reviews

This would be the perfect getaway for a couple or even a single person who loves waking up to a gorgeous rural view and an elegant medieval ruin to the side of the barn. The iconic town of Battle with its abbey and many interesting shops and restaurants is only three miles away. This is a beautiful part of rural Sussex and has so much to offer visitors.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walk ten minutes to a traditional pub, the Plough Inn, which serves good food. Battle has lots of pubs, cafés and restaurants. Less than a mile away is Fore Wood, an ancient woodland and one of the best places in the UK for spotting wildlife, but birders will head to Filsham for magnificent reedbeds and breeding birds. Visit the moated castle at Herstmonceux with its Elizabethan gardens.

Local points of interest from Christian & Rebecca Ennels

  • Battle Abbey is well worth a visit, a monastery built on the site of the Battle of Hastings. The town, Battle offers a wonderful deli, a wide selection of restaurants and many boutique shops.
  • The nearest beach is situated about a 15minute drive away in Bexhill on Sea. Other beautiful beaches in Pett, Cooden and Eastbourne are easily accessible by car. The beaches in Hastings can be reached by either car or the train from our village.
  • Bodiam Boating Station offers kayaking, rowing and paddleboarding with a gorgeous cafe serving delicious food. You can either hire the boats here or launch your own.
  • A short walk from the property is the RSPB Fore Wood Nature Reserve, walk among the abundance of bluebells and wild garlic in Spring and enjoy walks and bird watching throughout the year.
  • Coombe Valley Nature Reserve offers marshland for an array of wild birds and leads you on a longer walk into Bexhill on Sea.
  • There are many cycle routes and pathways in the area, one being the Cuckoo Trail, additionally the seafront promenades in Hastings and Bexhill on Sea and the Coombe Valley Way.

Introducing

Christian & Rebecca Ennels

Christian and Rebecca are friendly and welcoming – they'll greet you if they are around but otherwise you let yourselves in with a key safe. They renovated their own house before building the Loft – quite a challenge as they wanted to make the buildings as sustainable as possible. The setting is lovely and you can ask them to tell you the story of the manor ruins. They have three pet sheep.
