The Experience
It’s all on one floor with an open-plan living and dining space, faultlessly comfortable and with a happy mix of old beams, pristine new oak and underfloor heating powered by an air source heat pump. Light floods in through bifold doors which lead out to the garden where you’ll find furniture for lounging, a table for al fresco meals and a barbecue. You can also hire a hot tub.
Bedrooms (one can be a twin and two have attractive exposed flint walls) have well-dressed king size beds, plump mattresses and spotless bathrooms – one en suite, the other shared. The kitchen is modern and well equipped and you are left all the basics plus local eggs, cheese, biscuits and bread to start you off. A corner sofa has room for all and there’s a big TV if the weather is foul.
There are wonderful walks from the door through pristine countryside, narrow lanes with high hedges, then miles of well-kept farmland. Nip into pretty Eye for shops.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're surrounded by lovely countryside and there is good walking and cycling – you can hire bikes. Although the feel is quite remote, you can easily reach villages and towns, even the coast. Eye, an eight-minute drive, is a pretty place with a castle, good shops, restaurants and cafés. Both Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings are less than an hour by car. Hop on a steam train, visit an ancient flour mill.
Local points of interest from Jo West
- Baxters Barn - which was originally built as two single-storied, red-brick and pantiled 19th-century cow sheds - is a great choice for those looking for a smaller countryside bolthole
- Named after Johnny Baxter, who spent more than 60 years as Head horsemen when the farm’s 40 horses were made up mainly of the famous Suffolk Punch breed.
- The barn is also, if rented alongside the three other barns found in a cluster in this part of the estate, ideal for large wedding parties.
- Rent Bicycles or the Hot Tub for added fun to your stay!

Introducing
Jo West
The West family, whose farming roots date back to 1643, have tended this estate for over 110 years. Jo, now the 8th generation, has a deep commitment to nurturing the land, livestock and surroundings with a diligent approach to conservation and sustainability. She is brilliant at running the Wild & West Barns and always alert to the needs of guests.
This is one of three medieval barns on a large estate which have been painstakingly converted into luxury holiday lets. No detail has been spared in providing the most elegant and chic decor to suit the majesty of the ancient buildings.
