The Experience

The Bull has been the community hub of the village since the late 1800s and is now beautifully renovated. You’ll still find a cracking beamed bar and a cosy rear dining room filled with locals but it’s now a destination for food and has introduced fresh and delightful rooms in the Pear Tree Inn, a 1760s Suffolk farmer’s cottage just up the road. Contemporary rural getaways are the order of the day and you just nip to the pub for breakfast, lunch and supper.

Start your day with a belting Bloody Mary, homemade jams and pastries, home-baked bread and a full English in the dining room. Set off into gently rolling countryside or visit Bury St Edmunds for shops and culture. Return to much comfort in your bedroom with Somnus mattresses, Bang & Olufsen speakers, smart TVs, homemade macaroons and a mini bar with local drinks.

Down at the bar you can decide what to eat and drink – nearly all from local suppliers and with ever-changing daily menus.

Reviews

Best friends Ben and Sam bought the boarded-up Bull in 2020 and with passion and dedication have transformed the place into a vibrant community hub and cosy country bolthole. Tuck into delicious seasonal pub food in the beamed bar, then retreat to fabulous bedrooms in a beautifully restored cottage just yards from the pub – they are the icing on the cake, oozing style and attention to detail.

David, Sawday's Inspector

The Bull at Troston is an excellent pub with rooms. The pub serves very high quality food as well as providing a good bar for the darts team. The rooms 200 yds from the pub are individual, very well appointed and converted from a cottage a year ago. Thoroughly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

Bury St Edmunds is 13 minutes by car for good independent shops and much culture. Visit St Edmundsbury Cathedral, the Abbey Ruins and Gardens, and Ickworth for precious artefacts and a superb Italianate garden. Drop in to Meg's Farm Shop and Rougham Hall Nurseries, have lunch at Wyken Vineyard, sip a glass of their Wyken Bacchus while you study the menu. A worthy discovery is the Elveden Estate.

Local points of interest from Ben

  • Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is a vibrant theatre. It was first built in 1819 and then restored. It's the only theatre in the National Trust portfolio.
  • Bury St Edmunds Abbey was once the most powerful and richest Benedictine monasteries in England.
  • Ickworth Estate is a great gateway for those who love nature and long walks, or a bike ride.
  • Nowton Park is just on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds. It consists in 200 acres of countryside landscaped over 100 years ago.
  • Moyses Hall Museum is situated in a beautiful medieval building with eclectic collections and exhibitions.

Introducing

Ben

Ben and Sam, Suffolk born and bred, are friends and have worked together at various places across the county before they decided to set up business together and bought this pub which had previously been boarded up for five years. They live in-house and work long hours front of house. They and their team are passionate and dedicated and have brought the place back to life brilliantly. Good job.
